Can't Transfer Photos From Digital Camera. Can Anyone Help?

I tried to transfer photos onto my laptop from my Nikkon digital camera and I've been getting this error message several times. It says something like I/O device error and something like DSCN4024.JPG.  I've been using this camera for several years and I've never received this error, I've always transferred everything with no problems. Does anyone know how to solve this?

Can you delete just the first picture.jpg?

At the bottom of the Win7 screen is a black task/menu bar.  Far left is the icon for your current programs (the Windows logo, blue circle with the 4 colors).  The next one over - at least on my machine - is a file folder icon (basically Windows Explorer) which is the index of all your programs and things like docs and music and photos.  If you scroll down you will come to 'Computer'.  IF you have the camera plugged in and turned on, it should register at or near the bottom of that 'computer' list as one of the drives.  If you open that, you should find the directories of the card.  If you open them, you should have a list of the photos on the camera's card.  There you should find the number of the photo that you are having the problem with.

(The machine I'm currently using has Win7 Pro)

Also, while you are there, you should be able to highlight all the files and copy them to a temp folder/directory, if you wish.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

When you plug in your camera, don't let camera be the one loading the pictures. Go to your document, pictures videos links and look for the link of you camera to appear, then click on that and download your pictures to your computer.

Yes, I can scroll through all the photos that are on my physical camera. However all the photos have a number and no letters on them.

Right-click on any of the photos, then Properties.

It is truly difficult to isolate the problem, one way would be to buy (or if you have one) a new memory card, take one or two random pictures with it and see if those will transfer.

If they do transfer then chances are your present video card is going south for the winter.

If they do not transfer then your problem is likely not in the video card itself.

Different USB cord would be another good test.

Different USB port as well...

Also finding or downloading the camera's owner's manual could prove helpful (well, reading it too).

I just bought a new card and when I put it in I still get the same error message, however it goes a little further and gives me a green bar that says it is importing, however it never gets past the first picture and gives the error message.

Now we're getting somewhere.

That likely means it's not the card itself.

Time to spring for a new USB cord.

However...

I never plug my camera into the PC, instead I use a card reader adapter and plug the card into the reader.

I don't believe it is either. For around the past several hours I've been to Samy's Cameras and Staples. I went to Samy's Cameras and they put my card into their Apple computer and the pictures showed, so they said it must be a problem with my computer. I then went to Staples they recommended I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, so I did that there, and it was taking too long there so I took my laptop from there and brung it home where it is currently finishing the update. I just hope when it finishes everything will work including all the other items that I have downloaded on that laptop.  I'm writing this from my other laptop waiting for the update to finish.

Have you considered using your phone for photos? You phone might take as good of pictures as your existing camera. You could always take the pictures with your phone and email them to yourself or upload them to a service like google drive.

Interesting.  I've used a Sony cameras for years, plugging them into the 'puter and have never had a problem. I tried a card reader once and it really didn't work out too well.

Oh well, what works for one doesn't always work for another.

I don't think I can follow this advice as there is a lot of information and now I don't think it will work as I'm currently in the process of downloading Windows 10 on the laptop I'm having this problem with.

No problem.  Wish I could have helped in a more timely manner.  Hope it gets straightened out without too much more trouble.

I hope so too, as it looks like I'm going to be way behind on my work.

I just finished downloading Windows 10 on the laptop and it's even worse now, everything appears to be freezing up worse than with Windows 7.  I'm almost positive this has nothing to do with the camera, usb, or card. I think the laptop has some serious problems, maybe hardware or software. I've decided to get rid on it, and use this laptop I'm currently using. The problem is I need to have my Wonderlister listing software on it and also my Stamps.com shipping software, I just hope I can reach their tech support at this time, or else I won't be able to get any work done or ship out items.

Re: Can't Transfer Photos From Digital Camera. Can Anyone Help?

Just a follow up. I'm using a new laptop and I'm trying to transfer the photos to this laptop, however when I put in the USB cord a window pops up, and I'm looking for anywhere to transfer the photos, and I can't see anything. Can anyone help me find the area to click to transfer the photos?
