"Give Us Your Social Security Number and Date of Birth"

Is Ebay kidding? They want this highly personal info to "verify" my identity before they'll pay me money for the stuff I sell with their new payment system starting March 1st. How about my Driver's License number and mother's maiden name too!!

No way I'm giving that kind of info to them. They don't need it and it puts me at risk for identity theft. All they need is my bank's routing number and my account number.

Been an Ebayer for 21 years but I sure won't be selling on Ebay any more unless they rescind this intrusive, identity theft bait policy.

Re: "Give Us Your Social Security Number and Date of Birth"

The date of birth is needed for purchasing certain items. MP (Ayden) is here to stay because eBay and Paypal could not agree on a new contract. It's that simple. The whining and threatening to leave is pointless. Use the system or don't. You are free to choose.

Re: "Give Us Your Social Security Number and Date of Birth"

Agree. I'm a victim of identity theft - twice. Providing my social security #, birth date and, even worse, my banking account # to an entity that's probably based in a foreign country is a recipe for another round of identity theft or worse, a hack of my banking account. I've been am eBay seller since 2008. Very comfortable using PayPal (linked to my credit card) for buyer payment, but never provided my banking information to PayPal; requested payment (to me) via check. The small check processing convenience fee was worth it for the security.

You can get paid now just fine so no change is required-- unless,of course, Ebay gets rid of the current pay system....which is what they are doing.

The new info requirements may not have been established to get rid of  casual sellers-- but I think that will be an unintended effect. That kind of thing happens with many decisions.

If Ebay persists on requiring my Social Security number and DOB, I am pulling the plug on selling-- and so are several of my friends...

If you look at your account set up, you will find that your DOB is already there.  You had to supply that to set up an Ebay account for buying or selling because we are all required to be  at least 18 years old.

Ebay is requiring the SSN because the federal government requires them to do so.  It isn't just because Ebay wants it.  That is a burden to protect that info no one would want just because they wanted it.  It is only because they are required to have it.

When Pay Pal is no longer processing payments for Ebay, what are you going to do?

You might not like it, but if you want to continue to sell here, you'll have to sign up for MP, providing that information.

Yes, there are several that are leaving, but there's a bunch of us staying.

Have a great day.

I suspect Ebay requires above the info combined with Power Of Attorney so they could withdraw money from your account without asking your permission. PayPal used to treat honest sellers much better - meaning - you had a say and right to dispute.

Releasethekraken is either factually mistaken or deliberately misleading when he incorrectly states that ebay is legally obligated to ask for our social security numbers.  Ebay is not required to file a 1099K unless the seller is engaged in over $20,000 is sales and has over 200 customers.  So the pretext that ebay is required to get this information is... well pretextual.  Which is a nice way of saying that it is a fake reason.  Which is a nice way of saying that it is dishonest.  And the claim that paypal is to blame for ebay's new draconian policies, that sounds about as honest as their claim that the IRS requires it (which it does not... look it up).   Pretexts and scapegoating may convince the weak minded.  But this kind of argument insults anyone who is intelligent enough to see through it.

Ebay will either relent on its new requirements or another entity will eventually fill the vacuum that ebay is creating.  But it is a shame that ebay is conducting itself in this way.  It may find that it doesn't just lose sellers; it may also lose a lot of buyers.  I don't really sell anything on ebay, but I buy a great deal.  One of the reasons is because I don't like engaging in commerce with Amazon and I like supporting the small sellers.  It would be a shame if ebay puts me in a position where I am looking for alternatives to doing commerce with ebay.  But hey, it is their company.  The market will ultimately determine whether ebay is making a bad move.

You may want to check yourself on some of this stuff as you are not correct and you are "demeaning" another poster because you have not updated yourself.

There have been some changes made in 2020 that you may not be aware of.  Some states, 8 to be exact are now requiring 1099Ks at a much lower level.  And there are more states that will be adopting this soon.  Some states as low as $600.

No matter how many sellers there are that don't like supplying the information to MP that they need is not going to change Ebay's position on this.  They ARE required to collect the information  and they aren't going to break the law to make some feel better and incur money penalties because of it.

@hempsprings

I'm glad you have stopped claiming 'federal law requires' SSN at $0, but the claim is still false.

The requirements are clear, and no law requires them to collect SSN/TIN at $0, $10 or even $500.

Many other platforms navigate simple state tax requirements like this without requiring SSN/TIN at $0. eBay just can't figure out how to do it. Or doesn't want to.

You are right about that PayPal claim though. I've also asked those who keep posting that bogus claim and they can provide no source for that claim. But I am open to seeing it.

No POA is required.  I know this has been explained before to you.  NO ONE is Required to do that.

I don't have a need to state that is every post I make.  So here we are again where you are reading more into my post than I actually said and again you failed.  I don't understand what appears to be a compulsive need to assume you know what more I was saying that I NEVER said.  I'm not in need of an sidekick to interpret my posts.

I also didn't mention PP.  Maybe you have me confused with someone else.

Does not require eBay to harvest information at levels below thresholds.

eBay is not a bank.

Nah. People are smart not to hand it over. It has nothing to do with taxes but more to do with how much you trust eBay.

Re: "Give Us Your Social Security Number and Date of Birth"

Many posters in here do not underdstand this. Yes, they need the SSN/DOB for the sellers PROTECTION and to be certain they are dealing with the right person with the right account and that the money goes where it should be going. The law requires it as well whether you sell 10 dollars in profit or 50,000.00 dollars in profit. You cannot escape the IRS.
