eBay not using PayPal anymore?

I got a message from eBay saying to update my account details.

"It’s now simpler to get paid on eBay

Getting paid has changed: Fees and expenses will be deducted before you get paid out and the remainder of your earnings will go directly to your bank account, not your PayPal account. Get set up in a few easy steps."

I primarily just tend to leave all the money I receive in my PayPal, so I wanted to ask for clarification: does this mean sellers can no longer use PayPal as a means of payment? We have to store the money in a bank account now?

I also saw something saying eBay raised their fees. Is that also true?

Thanks for clarifying.

Re: eBay not using PayPal anymore?

The PayPal payment process is ending, so today I am being forced to link my bank account, for unfettered eBay access, for not only deposits, but also unfettered access for withdrawals. In addition, eBay wants me to log into my bank account through a third party app "PayWithMyBank".

What could go wrong? Does eBay think they are immune to being hacked.? There are numerous ways (screen scraping, hacked API's) that this third party 'PayWithMyBank" could expose my login and password.

#1 My Wells Fargo banker told me to never let anyone have open access for withdrawals on my bank account . This is the same as an open ACH allowing access to my account.

#2 Giving a third party my bank account login credentials?? Once again against Wells Fargo policy!

* I'm trying to figure out if it's better to stay on the eBay selling platform, because I'll soon have less completion with everyone canceling their eBay account - or should I just go ahead and cancel my account. (20 year seller)...

Re: eBay not using PayPal anymore?

Just don't keep that much money in the account. If someone gets in, it will overdraft. The bank won't give them an unlimited amount of money and if you report it right away, the bank may cover you for fraud like a credit card does.

While I know that many posters have said that attaching your bank account gives Ebay unlimited access to your account, that simply is NOT true.  They can deposit to that account and pull from that account after a few days if your MP account is in a negative balance.  As long as each seller is paying attention to the activity in their MP account, this should not take you by surprise.

Using PayWithMyBank is an OPTION not a requirement.  You do NOT have to use it.  Drop to the bottom of the screen for another option.  Easy stuff.

I'm sure you bank warned you against doing that, good thing that is not anything MP requires.

Re: eBay not using PayPal anymore?

Here is a sample of what happens when you owe eBay.

First eMail letting me know money will be taken from Bank Account in a few days.

I did not want to wait a few days for the payment to be made and I wanted to use my Credit Card.

I go to Managed payments and select to make payment and then I select the source of where I would like the payment to come from (Credit Card).

I ok the payment then I get the second eMail for the payment.

It's no big deal.

Re: eBay not using PayPal anymore?

Sure at least paypal doesn't charge 12% on taxes paid nor do they charge 12% on the shipping fees.

but hey that doesn't have effect the profit on your sold item, it has a direct hit and an explosion of final costs

that are misrepresented by ebay . They managed to **bleep** everyone into believing their MP and no choice of where your money goes and when it will get there is their latest miracle policy that is full of **bleep**.

Well thank you for that information.  I never got these types of emails when my account went to a negative balance for some international shipping charges from April and May earlier this week.  This is very interesting.

I get it.  Not to many of us actually like the FVF being charged on Sales tax.  There isn't a lot of support out there for that and I think it is completely understandable.

However it is NOT misrepresented by Ebay.  It has clearly been stated on the policy pages for MP sellers fees since they started this practice back in August of 2020.  Because some sellers haven't read the policy page doesn't mean that Ebay is hiding anything from you or anyone else.  It simply means you have not taken a moment to check what the policy states.

Ebay has charged FVFs on shipping for over 10 years.  IDK why some posters want to bring this up after all that time.  It is an old dead conversation and it is a normal thing to do in the industry as well.  So Ebay is NOT doing anything unusual.  They are just doing something that some don't like.  There is a difference.

For sellers that do not have a store, most of them will pay 10.20% FVF to Ebay and 2.35% money processing fee for a total of 12.55%.

Now since PP always has charged their 2.9% fee on the entire amount received which included shipping and sales tax, then the part that is new to us is 12.55% - 2.9% = 9.65%.  So the 9.65% is what we aren't use to.  Again I don't like it any better than you do.  So on $10.00 worth of sales tax, that is less than 10 cents.

But if you are actually interested in finding out what the true impact to your fees are, you need to compare an entire months worth of transactions, not cherry pick a transaction or two.  While sales that don't have any sales tax on them aren't frequent, they do happen and our fees on them are LOWER by 0.55% than they were in Ebay plus PP.  So we get a bit of an offset there.  That reduction is on the entire transaction.

So in a months time you are far more likely to find that MP is a neutral change than an increase in fees.  But you have to be willing to do a little work to find the truth of the situation for yourself.

Re: eBay not using PayPal anymore?

Funny, that is exactly what the charge was for, International Shipping.  One package for eBay Standard International shipping to be exact.

It showed up on the Recent Transactions List also.

That is interesting too.  Mine show up in my recent transactions too, but slightly differently and again no option to pay with a back up source.

Oh wait, this might be a me problem.  My displays are slightly different than yours, that could be because I have a store and my account is a business account.  And I did have a back up funding source entered, but it went poof for some reason.  So I reentered it.

I'll pay close attention the next time this happens.  Maybe it will now function the way it did for you.  That would make things so much easier.  Thank you so much for all the info you shared.  It was very helpful.

Re: eBay not using PayPal anymore?

I have found that eBays cost to sellers has gone up.  They give you 'Free' 200 listings per month (35 cents each)  then charge you a new  30 cent item fee when your item sells.  Thanks for nothing eBay.  They didn't lie when they told you you "could ' make more money, but I guess that means you have to raise your prices and in turn make them more money.  This is my view of the situation.

Re: eBay not using PayPal anymore?

Thanks but you forgot to mention the 30 cent per item fee that you sell.  That IS a raise in fees.  I guess that replaces  the PayPal fee, now it goes to eBay

Re: eBay not using PayPal anymore?

ebay is continually monkeying with stuff, and screwing this site up.   I'm about fed up with it.  All the new listing rules, changing payments into my private bank account.    So I give ebay  my banking account and routing numbers.  What happens when a hacker gets into ebay and steals all my bank account information?  You think this can't happen?  Think again.  If ebay can deposit into your account then a hacker can certainly make a withdrawal.  It's better to have one provider like paypal handle it all.

Re: eBay not using PayPal anymore?

👍👍  For having the option to keep PayPal as an option.  It is has worked for me for most of the 20 years I have been buying and selling on eBay.  I don't like giving out any more personal info than I have to and I don't consider what I do as a business, but more of a hobby.  I am retired and it gives me something to do.  So, I either explore other options or spend more time reading and/or sign up for some colleges classes online.

You have ALWAYS paid that 30 cent per transaction fee.  When you were in PP, you paid it to them.  Now that you moved into MP, you are not paying it to them.  There is NO difference.  The amount is the same, the fee is the same, the ONLY difference is you now pay it to MP instead of PP.
