recently I received a message offering me 15.00 dollars ebay credit to switch to managed payments before december 1st. why would they offer me 15.00 to do something that is mandatory?
I remember in 2014 when eBay was hacked and over 140million users data was compromised.
Last year Devin Wenig and Steve Wymer seemed to lead a campaign to harass and ultimately try to destroy the lives of a couple who run a site critical of eBay. (a version of the story was published in the NYtimes September 26, 2020 - Inside eBay's Cockroach Cult - The Ghastly Story of A Stalking Scandal by David Streitfield)
I cannot find any statement issued from eBay that addresses either of these glaring issues as they make the move to require Managed Payments. Does such a statement exist? If so, where is it published?
I am reluctant to switch over to MP in order to continue selling on eBay because not only do I not trust the security of eBay, but I really don't want to support the toxic culture that engendered a stalking scandal in which 6 eBay employees were convicted June of this year. Is this being atoned for and mended under the management of Jamie Iannone, former eBay VP? who is going to hold this company accountable if not the buyers and sellers who have already been transacting for years? Especially now that eBay customer service seems to have become automated or non-existent... forgive me if I sound cynical, but I really don't think eBay cares about anything but its stock.
thanks to anyone taking the time to read this, I do appreciate any insight into the matter .

Truth not rhetoric. Trust in how many individuals that work for the government???
If I was advising you on personal security: I would advise you never under any circumstance to give out personal information:
Nowthat said: there is law and were you SS number is mandatory; such as in banking: Since eBay's Manged pay is considered such: law is involved. They have need of the number.
The choice is yours to give or not give: and to sell or not sell on eBay.
If you do: I advise a separate account on a different bank than your normal one: it also provides a better security level for your protection.

it's a curious contradiction to have so much faith in the Law but so much distrust of the government. I'd say it's a safe bet to be even more skeptical of a large corporation, especially when that corporation has a long track record of undermining it's clients' best interests in order to spur its own growth .
these days "truth" and "rhetoric" seem to be the same thing . at least here online, I'll admit I can't tell the difference. thanks for the advice though, if I were to give the predators at eBay more of my hard earned money next year I would want to do it from a separate business account.

I'm not giving my SSN this is another way for IRS to come after you retroactively. Goodbye eBay

Except at Target, People's Bank, Aetna, Conecticut State University system, I could go on

It is a hell of a coincidence that once Biden and the Democrats get in they start to lift up the seat cushions for more tax revenue. That's what the SSN requirement is all about, if not immediately then an inevitability

I still do not get why all of the sudden eBay is asking for SSN . Not sure who to trust but I see more and more corruption and fraud .

I just got this notification today 2/8/25. What a surprise 😮 after all these years! I might buy from eBay but selling is not going to work after this SSN update. Wish you all the best of luck selling in eBay . In my experience not worth to risk it for a penny profit!! I removed all my listing to think about this .

For small time sellers just moving out the old no longer wanted treasures...................... not worth the aggravation of filing a tax return when they were selling at a loss, but the law is the law.
For those that it makes no sense for.................. then moving on is the best move.
Just has to be understood that not providing the SSAN can result in extreme difficulty obtaining "held funds. (if applicable)

After all these years no longer pertains because the INFORM Consumers Act wants eBay to periodically prove the seller's identity.
Every year my dang doctor asks me the same questions I already answered on my last visit. It isn't good enough to say nothing has changed. They want me to fill out the form all over again.
