Sales tax collection

I've recently noticed that everything I buy is now being taxed. I cannot find an answer to this.

Say I buy an item in Washington state and it's shipped to Florida, when I check out a sales tax shows up in the payment screen. My question is... which state(s) are collecting the tax? The selling state, the ship to state, or (shudder) BOTH states? If BOTH is possible by taxing authorities, this potential for dual taxation has SERIOUS financial consequences for internet buyers.

I'm not inclined to pay tax to Washington (or any other state) , if possible I would much rather see my home state get the revenue. The problem here is Ebay's item location is not granular enough to select vendors by state.

Yeah, I can select distance which is OK for ginormous states like Florida and Texas but states in close proximity to each other like N.Y, N.J, Ct, etc. won't benefit by screening vendors by miles.

@gnappi

The sales tax goes to the State the item was shipped to, doesn't matter where the seller is located.

Have a great day.

Re: Sales tax collection

Internet sales are now taxed

We internet buyers were probably lucky to have enjoyed tax free sales for as long as we did

no one likes paying taxes but it is a necessary fact of life

Terry, If you read my OP, I'm not objecting to taxes, but who gets them and how I can steer business to my home state instead of others.

Re: Sales tax collection

To reiterate, the state sales tax that eBay is currently collecting for a remitting to about 43 states is based on the shipping address of the buyer, not the seller's address.

So, if your shipping address is in your home state, then you can be assured that the funds are being steered to the treasury of that state.

On this ID, you aren't selling. So I assume you're a buyer.

When you make a purchase and make payment, you have the item sent to an address. If you purchase and item from a seller in Washington and have it shipped to Florida, you are paying the sales tax based on Florida's tax rate. Although the tax shows as going to the seller with your payment for the purchase, the seller doesn't get the sales tax money.

Ebay forwards it to Florida.
