Sale Tax Remittance

Hi, It's been a long time since I have sold on eBay and I am a little confused about the sales tax.

First, I am glad that they collect and remit on my behalf-that's a nice thing.  But I don't see the sales tax entry in the transaction details for the item I just sold.  I see on the order info the $50 for the book, the shipping cost, and the sales tax and the total for all that.

On the transaction details, I see the 14.6% final value fee applied to the total from above.  Then I see an "International Fee" fee of 1.65% (which I didn't know about and the buyer had the item sent to Penn, even though he lives in the UK), and then the additional 30c Final Value Fee per order.  All of that equals the total dollar amount they say was paid into my bank account.  But nowhere do I see the  $3.25 collected in sales tax being deducted from the total sale figure.  What has happened to the sales tax?

Thank you!  Dave

Re: Sale Tax Remittance

It was removed after it was collected.

Item $10

Shipping $5

Tax $2

Total $17

Final Value Fee % x Total (13% x $17) = $2.21 + .30c = $2.51

$17 minus $2.51 (FVF) minus $2 (Tax) = $12.49 into bank (or $7.49 if you pay for shipping via Pending Payments)

Run a 'report' under the 'PAYMENTS' tab in 'SELLER HUB' and it will show you everything for each transaction.

Re: Sale Tax Remittance

You said buyer lives in UK, are they registered in UK? - is the sales tax applied for the delivery address and not the buyer's registered address?  That would explain the Intl fee, which is basically ebay's currency conversion fee.  fair enough.  But I would then expect to see a VAT.

Re: Sale Tax Remittance

Yes, it was actually very clearly listed.  I was just confused that they showed the deductions from two different totals and I was expecting the sales tax to be shown as deducted from the final total rather than just the fees coming out of the book amount plus the shipping fee.  Now I know!  Thank you!  (It does irk me that we pay a fee on shipping and taxes, neither of which really has anything to do to us, but that's a rant for another day).

Thank you!

Re: Sale Tax Remittance

It seems that I am charged the sales tax for Pennsylvania where the book was sent and then that extra fee because the buyer is actually in the U.K.  I read the fees chart before I started but it didn't mention anything about an "International Fee."  I just went back to that page and there, under FAQ, is: What are “international fees”?  I never looked down there because I didn't have any questions!

This is the explanation on another page linked from that FAQ:

International site visibility and fees

International site visibility is an optional upgrade that ensures your eBay.com listings are visible in top-level search results on other eBay sites. Currently, international site visibility is only supported by the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada sites, but we're working on further expansion.

There is a small, separate fee for each site you choose for this upgrade, so you have complete control over where you want your listings to appear. These fees aren't refundable unless your listing doesn't meet the other country's requirements.

So, I likely will not be selling to a foreign buyer any more.

Thanks!
