From my architectural days I learned that non-bearing walls are usually framed @24" o.c. and bearing walls @16" o.c. That's probably why you encountered the 24" spacing. When we finished off the basement I insisted on 16" centers because I knew I was going to hang the layout off the walls.
B-)
Makes for sturdier wall too WRT drywall. my trainroom (one wall) diesn't have a solid feel when you tap onto the drywall between the studs. I wouldn't have it any other way, don't like going by the bare minimum codes.
started roughing in the wiriing.

I like the sturdy feel of plaster in the old houses we have had (not that I think we could afford to pay for new plaster...). Drywall on 24" sounds yucky for sure, not too thrilled with 16". Though the drywall we put on the ceiling for the bathroom remodel was glue and screws, and it feels really solid, kind-of goofy. But the drywall cement seemed to about double the cost of the drywall (if I recall...).

4'x8'x 1/2" drywall in winnipeg at Home Despot goes for about $11 a sheet I think. (maybe it was on sale for $8 when I had bought some for kitchen.
usuless trivia 2x4x8 stud is $2.73 ish.
I'm using 1x4 pine for my layout frame. I'll take a pic before it gets covered.

Spent Friday morning ripping up a siding I had in the town that just never worked right and I then cut that switch into the upper level to create a siding for the sawmill that I moved up there. Gives me more operational possibilites this way. I also relocated the main station and the freight house which freed up a siding to store the Galloping Goose next to the station now. Did I mention that I bought a new engine, a Porter 0-4-2 to use as a switcher in the main yard. It's a new release by Bachmann with Tsnuami sound and DCC of course.
Well, back to my football......

What an ending to Wpg Blue Bombers vs Montreal. :_| 1 yard from goal and 5 secs left and couldn't get ball past line on 2nd down.

Working on wiring rough in at one end of existing layout (still) I have the sections along the 2 walls ready for plywood surface which involves elevating some of the track. Hope to do that today.
One of the original sections feels like the umpteenth time now of elecrtical revisions. I am just having two insulated zones. Less wire to run that way. Nothing worse than not working onlayout for several months and then you have to spend an evening retracing your steps to figure where you left off or why you have something a certain way.

Almost time to lay track. Still need to figure out how to layout the town. (aside from on an angle so nothing is parallel to domino) Plus one area I still need to play with flex track to come up with idea for track arrangement. Easier to visulize than drawing it out.
Haven't punched thru walls yet or built layout on recroom side.

Think I got my track arrangment figured out for cement plant. lot of turnouts will be used (8) but gives flexible switching options as my plant will now incorporate warehouse for boxcars for bagged cement (still used by contractors for the portable cement mixers on construction sites)
Track 1 - covered hopper storage (finished product)
Track 2 - open hoppers arrival (cushed limestone)
Track 3- run around track
Spurs extending off ladder tracks
1) Tail for Track 2&3 for run around moves
2) boxcar storage
3) hopper loading track
4) boxcar in warehouse
5) spur to limestone hopper unloading
pic coming soon.

Doing some math, I have like 20+ lenths of flextrack plus some shorter scrap pieces, the section in recroom (twin mainline plus yard) will require something like 75 feet of track. 😮 At least cork is cheap.
I'll see what I have left for flex track after I complete the new trackwork in my trainroom. Time to take a pic of my cement plant yard for ya'll.
--- too bad flex track does not stretch as well as bend... Charles, PS, waiting for pics...

After laying turnouts, I had to pull them last night so I could ballast underneath them.
-what I do is put a thin layer of glue on cork where turnout is, and spinkle ballast on, use a small block of wood to press the ballast into glue, let cure, rub my fingers over ballast to sweep away loose and/or bumpy material leaving a smooth ballasted surface. I install the turnout on top of this. When you look down at the turnout you see ballast under the ties, and if you don't like ballastig around moving parts of the turnout, then you don't see just cork. 🙂
Prototype doesn't get carries away with ballasting switches as it will block sitting water which will freeze causing problems with the switch operating.

Interesting way to do it. I have always ballasted up to the frog from the non-point end, leaving the points free of ballast. Now in the larger scale, I ballast the whole thing except for the throw area. Haven't glued one shut yet......

pics of my cement plant area posted.
Also some railfanning shots from labour day weekend and july.
...the cement plant looks like it is going to be an impressive complex... Charles

That's just the stuff I built for the previous version/layout. There will be some more structures to go with this that will ave to be scratchbuilt. I am putting a rotary kiln in behind but some of it will be in view. It will be fun weathering it to look heat stained. (some great pics googled showing the pattern to go by when I airbrush it.

Still laying cork and track for the mainline. Still fair bit of work before I venture into the recroom. Still have soldering to do. At least all the wires were run before the plywood surface.

Bought some more lumber so I can start building benchwork for the recroom side of the layout. B-)

I have been given access to a photo of my wooden hopper with more detail, so I am in the process of refineing my drawing (oh well a lot of refining...). To get some of the shapes I needed to draw this goofy shape (using the "Follow Me" command). A little break along the way...
All the best,
Charles

Been busy since saturday building benchwork for the recroom for my RR expansion. Measured 4 times, cut once, hope it all fits.
The 2 sections are out in garage with paint drying. I am painting the framework satin black.

Just finished Wicked Wanda's for the tree layout. It is populated with three drunk patrons and eight naughty girls in various states of undress. No pictures though. This is a family show! Do you think it is fitting for the foreground under the tree?

Should be good as a focal point, we NEED pictures.

I'll try later......

If you're not having any guests over the holidays then go with whatever floats your boat. If you are having guests over ,then make the scene appropiate......put a santa hat on one of the naked hookers. B-)
