Hello Gals and Guys -
I went to make an offer on an item and was prompted to set my default payment method, which as a long time eBay user, I've never had to before and probably makes it less likely I'll do it in the future. I'm curious how this came about? Thanks for any help.

This is a setting the seller enables. Sellers got tired of buyers making offers and not paying when their offer was accepted so eBay added this feature. They can also require it for bidding so if you win it's automatically paid. That cuts down on sport bidders, tire kickers and time wasters.

It's being tested.
I was pretty sure buyers would hate it, and so far I've seen only posts from buyers and potential buyers who are insulted by the demand.

That makes some sense, but why not require it only when a bidder has unpaid mark(s) on their record? I hate companies, not just eBAY, trying to vacuum up all my data.

Buyers are likely frustrated & very disappointed when their purchase is inappropriately canceled.
Any reason ebay shouldn't increase penalties to help cut down on seller cancellations ?
Cheers

@zazonz eBay wont vacuum up your data.
eBay is not the payment processor.
It is no different then when you use your CC at the gas station and then pump gas.
There are other blocks for unpaid marks and those work to an extent.
As a seller I give more consideration to an offer that comes with the notice that if I accept it is authorized for payment.

There are far more deadbeats here than sellers cancelling items.

This is actually good unless , you want to buy several items from the same seller and would like combined shipping. In those situations, it's best to contact the seller and tell them that you would like to buy (or make offers) on items A, B + C. Tell him to please take of the setting requiring immediate payment. Tell him your zipcode and ask what the combined shipping will be.

Declining sales ?
I think this new default payment on offers will result in a decline in multiple item purchases & buyer offers.

I agree. For me, nine times out of ten, when a buyer messages me to ask about taking an offer, it's because they want to buy multiple items and would like to combine shipping/ask for a discount if they buy more than one thing. I haven't had a non-payer since 2018 so this setting is useless to me and I hate that even though I've turned it off for my listings, apparently some buyers are forced into it anyway regardless of my own personal settings.

Absolutly agree. As a long time eBay member and buyer I am completely insulted by the intrusiveness of this option. Hated it when it applied to “offers” now I see it is being applied to “bidding”. Makes me avoid any listing that requires this. The end around is to message a seller directly and discuss offers and bids. However, e-bay also tries to restrict that too. By the way, this isn’t about helping sellers, e-bay could use other methods to help them collect. This is about creating a collection method and non-paying buyers that is CONVENIENT for e-bay.

Exactly. This isn’t about helping sellers avoid non-paying bidders and offer its this is about making things convenient for e-bay!!!

If you honestly believe that e-bay won’t vacuum up your payment data then I think you are being myopic. While they may not fraudulently charge you they will, as does EVERY platform, collect data and statistics about which payment method you use. Remember, it’s alway about data collection.

You are correct. As a long time eBay member and buyer with a 100% positive feed back on EVERY purchase I’ve made since 1998, I can tell you that I now avoid getting serious about any listing that requires this. I am insulted by the implication that’s seller is so fearful of not getting paid that I’m thinking the seller is not someone I would want to do business with. Sorry if that offends but I am equally offended by the e-bay overreach.

As a long time e-bay member with a 100% positive rating on EVERY one of my transactions since 1998 (not this latest ratings for the past year nonsense) I am totally offended by this new “move” by e-bay. I avoid getting serious on any listing that has this feature. This isn’t an online auction house any more. It’s more of a straight up purchasing market place.
