What the hell has happened to search?

It's been about a month since eBay changed search results, and the results have been disgusting since. I see a million different promoted listings throughout my entire search feed, and the same ones over and over again. It's clutters the search and makes finding what I'm looking for a million times harder since there are duplicates everywhere. This isn't what you want eBay, it obviously isn't, you want people buying on your platform, not being so frustrated they leave and contemplate using it again.

Not only this. When I search for newly listed items, I get items that are not even related to the item, if I search for iPhone 8 I get iPhone 6S listings coming up. Sometimes completely different phones, items etc. It never used to be like this, why is it like this now? I know about the - tag people use when searching but it was never needed before. I always used to see people complaining that each eBay update is making the site and app worse, and never used to complain, but some of these changes are so frustrating I can't ignore them.

How is the MAIN feature of the site not working properly? eBay is a multi-billion dollar company and things like this happen. It's sad that small companies do better, make apps that are better organised and easier for the buyer and seller. I've reported over 20 bugs to the app developers and not 1 has been fixed. You still can't email labels, global shipping still enables itself, offers still enables itself, newly listed switch keeps flicking on and off etc. Even me making this post on my phone, my keyboard cursor keeps glitching and I have to continuously keep scrolling down.

Rant over. eBay please fix these issues. I've been with you guys for over 15 years and it's becoming a joke. I wish to see better.

@sultanhayat,

eBay is also an older company that started out using computer based platforms, and is trying to make those work with the newer App technology. Unfortunately, they got rid of their own IT dept. and have shopped out much of the development to the lowest bidders, many of whom have no experience with the older tech, so they don't know if and when their programming  causes conflicts.

I can't speak to the label issue, since I've never had to send one but I've seen where labels can be opened in a PDF format which I can easily attach to an email.  Global Shipping is an option you have to opt out of for it no longer to show up. (Link Below)

Best offer is attached automatically when the Quick listing tools are used. It has to be selected when the Advanced / Business tool is used. Ignore ebay's blurb about the advanced tool being for high volume sellers.

Some of your issues could be caused by your devices.  If you use Chrome, try a different browser when using eBay.  Chrome and eBay do not play well together.  Browser up-dates can cause issues as well. I never allow one until it has been out for awhile and any issues have fixes released.  Keeping your temporary internet files and cookie cache clear can help the site work better.  There are some great Free utilities you can download for most computer or portable device operating systems that make cleaning them easy.

Re: What the hell has happened to search?

Search has been badly broken since early June at least. Something is wrong with the implementation of the "smart search" keyword substitution feature -- it often will make inappropriate substitutions and then the results are filled with items that do not match the original search terms.

See this thread for some examples and workarounds to the broken search:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Technical-Issues/Ebay-item-search-results-flooded-with-unrelated-items...

Unfortunately many casual eBay users do not know how to bypass the "smart search" feature, and as a consequence they may have a very frustrating time trying to effectively search for items. This is something eBay needs to address.

Sponsored items appearing in search results can be hidden by using an ad blocking extension in your browser. I use Ad Block Plus and then uncheck "Allow Acceptable Ads" in the preferences. See here for details:

Them being an older company is no excuse for the state of their platform. It's a complete mess and they should invest in fixing it, what confuses me is what the people at the top are doing. Do they even consider anything new, any improvements to the service? Or do they just come into work, laugh around at the amount they make and walk out? Honestly, me being an amateur in web design, can make a better designed website than these idiots getting paid insane amounts of money, AND I don't even mind doing it for free!

Onto the issues with the app, I've mainly experienced problems with the Android version. It is not my device, I change phone almost every week and have the same issues on all of them. The website is a shambles, the app is a mess, the entirety of eBay is a mess.

The offer enabling and global shipping. Why is the option not made easier to turn off? The website is already so difficult to navigate, especially the mobile site where you can't even access your settings. Something really needs to change, and I don't know when they're going to.

And lastly, the shipping labels... I've never seen something so cluttered and messy. I always have to go to the desktop site via my phone, find the listing, click the view return button, let it process the label, half the time the label goes blank do you need to refresh the page. You might think, what's the problem with this. The problem is each step takes about 30 seconds from your phone, that's like a good 5 minutes printing out 1 label, now imagine doing this if you have hundreds of items a day, or like me, dozens of returns weekly (I buy a lot). It's frustrating. eBay is frustrating period. The email label option never works, not on PC, not on an iPhone or Android phone, not on anything. Why is it even there when it hasn't been functioning for over 2 years? The problems are non-stop. I really hate being picky and usually keep quiet about complaints, but this is plain dumb.

Re: What the hell has happened to search?

And I've just checked, I'm not even enrolled onto the global shipping programme, why does the option still re-enable itself each time I relist an item? I can't explain my frustration honestly, years of the app and site getting worse by the day. I use eBay 99% of the time on my phone so I can't even use adblock to stop the promoted listings anyway.

Re: What the hell has happened to search?

Then you need to stop using the phone - your statements indicate it isn't the right tool for the job for buying or selling since you don't like the things the app defaults to and you can't use Adblock to customize your viewing experience.

You get what you get when using apps or limited mobile device views.

And that's your response to criticism. Don't use it? Thank you for your beautifully helpful input.

Re: What the hell has happened to search?

It was helpful - it told you to stop doing what causes you problems instead of complaining about things that are likely not going to change.

If you want to complain about or get help with mobile app specific issues then you need to do it in the mobile app forums.
https://community.ebay.com/t5/Mobile-App-Android/bd-p/androidapp
https://community.ebay.com/t5/Mobile-App-iOS/bd-p/iosapp

GSP being automatically applied *may* have been one of the announced changes some time in the past in one of the updates or eBay announcements (I don't recall - there were quite a few things the app does that users don't like), or might be yet another bug where the app ignores global site settings.

(BTW it appears you think I have something to do with eBay. Nope.)

When the problem isn't a concern or even looked at ... nothing will change here.

eBay is the root cause of many Sellers & Buyers leaving ... because they can't provide a stable platform and then don't seem interested to assist when there's an issue.

Your activism isn't going to change anything.

(never did save the millions of disadvantaged IE11 users with login/crashing problems with your talk and insider contacts as promised. While dismissing diagnostic and workaround attempts that might have helped them actually get things done.)

In other breaking news, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Dealing with what is is more productive. Repeating "eBay is the cause of buyers and sellers leaving" and "it's the reason I no longer buy here" over and over, and injecting it into any thread you can will do nothing but get you ignored.

Re: What the hell has happened to search?

Yep, search is a problem.  I did a search on the word "nothing" and the result was "Nothing found."  So now I am confused.  Was nothing found or wasn't it?

List more, sell more. Goodwill that other, uh, stuff.

Feeling sleepy? There's an app for that.

My activism alone may not change anything, but the collective activism of many will.  (But, my activism is pretty good, so sometimes it works without much help.)

(And yes, you finally agree that millions of eBay customers were impacted by the IE11 Log-in problem ... and I always posted a workaround to help the hundreds that may have visited Community Boards.)

And you are correct, the sun does set in the west ... and may soon set on eBay, if they don't start listening to their customers.

And on your last analytical point ... I state facts or my qualified opinions and always try to help members here.  This week I had 2 Accepted Solutions, was given 2 Community Badges (Helping Hand Badge & Pro Badge) and when I just checked, I was #2 on the Helpful Leaderboard for Selling (for this past week).

And I'll repeat what I believe, eBay is the main reason that longtime Sellers and Buyers are leaving ... because they aren't listening to their Customers.

You are registered in the UK. Are you having this trouble on ebay.com? Or ebay.co.uk? If you post this thread on the UK discussion boards, your fellow Brits may be able to give you more insight on what's happening on ebay.co.uk.
