What is with automatic payment and how do I stop it?

Over the past few days all the auctions I've won has been automatically paid, to a card I don't even want to use. I can't seem to figure out how to stop this or even change it?

The only thing I can see is to delete all the cards and payment methods I have on the account. I want to be able to chose how I pay it, sometimes I use one card for a small purchase or sometimes for a bigger one I may want to use a different method.

Is there anyway to stop this horrible change?

Re: What is with automatic payment and how do I stop it?

They say sellers have to opt-out of auto-pay...they say.

I have been winning multiple auctions from domestic and international sellers without auto-pay.

I pay when I want to.

I never heard of this auto-pay until some started talking about it here.

I seriously don't think a lot of sellers have done this opt-out of auto pay. I mean, unless you get a personal email would you really know what to do? I didn't.

I think its more of the pick and chose of buyers.

I would be interested to see what an auto-pay is....meaning what credit card it uses from me...I have I think 6 credit cards on file. LOL

As a buyer you cannot opt out of auto pay. The bad buyers (non-payers) ruined it for the good buyers.

What you can do is set up your preferred default payment method, and you can change it at any time if you want to use a different card for a different transaction. It's on your account settings page.

So what about the bad sellers, should ebay punish all sellers because of a minority?

As a buyer bad sellers cost me time and money too.

Meanwhile ebay does nothing, I'm currently waiting for my $90 refund for over a month now because I was the only bidder so the seller decided to send me half my order. My favorite part is ebay will remove my negative or neutral feedback, if I left one, because I was refunded.

Re: What is with automatic payment and how do I stop it?

I have a debit card set up as a major payment. And then I have credit cards as well. And I also have my banking account number in eBay. Could be why I use any card to pay with within 4 days.

@phishbeatles

You can't stop Auto-Pay, but you can be proactive when bidding/buying, as @wastingtime101 suggests.

Account settings/Payment information/Payments/Payment options -- From there you can Edit/Delete/Add, etc.

I am a buyer only on this site... and sellers have been punished in the past because of a few. Sellers can't leave negative feedback or negatively worded feedback against a buyer, and I believe that started in 2008 because some sellers were abusing the feedback system by threatening honest buyers with retaliation for the factual negative feedback left for them.

They did, in 2011 sellers began paying FVF on shipping because the few bad eggs were listing $5.00 items with exaggerated shipping costs to circumvent paying correct fee's. So Yup, now we all pay those extra fee's.

@phishbeatles

As to the issue of opting out of auto pay (annoying for those who wish to combine purchases especially) before you buy contact the seller and ask if they will opt out for you, most of us did not even know we were opted IN!

Re: What is with automatic payment and how do I stop it?

Well that does nothing for the buyers to guarantee the sellers fulfill their end of the transaction.

Auto-pay was implemented so buyers have to guarantee an immediate payment for what they commit to buy through offers and auctions . Evidently 96 hours was too long to wait. So what has ebay done for the buyers to guarantee them the seller fulfills their end of the contract?

Many sellers know how to play the system and bad buyer experiences happens way too often . It certainly takes buyers a lot longer than 96 hours to be refunded. And with the fake tracking number scan the MBG is useless. But I get it, ebay makes no money on refunds, so why make that a priority too.

You're not being subjected to autopay because you haven't been opted into it yet. They're rolling it out to buyers in waves. It will get to you. When it does you'll be asked on the first offer or auction to pick one of your credit cards. Once you do that card will be used to automatically pay for every auction won or offer accepted, with no option to change it.

It's been mentioned in the last several Seller Updates going back a while, and Iannone first mentioned it rolling out in his 2020 eBay Open Keynote.

They already do in numerous ways, including forcing sellers to refund when buyers make false claims.

You have 30 days to file a missing parts return request. If you passed that window you'll have to go to your payment provider and hope they'll back you up. eBay's Money Back Guarantee is very buyer-centric.

Same for a seller that falls victim to the fake tracking scam with buyer returns. That's a 2-way street. It takes legwork for both buyers and sellers to get proper documentation to fight the fake tracking scam.

I don't read seller's updates. I am too busy with other things to do.

Taking a few minutes to read seller updates can be a good thing. It enlightens readers about changes (updates) and can aid in being informed so as to not inadvertently post uninformed, confusing, misleading information of a variety of subjects that should be left to the informed.
