Hello,
I recently purchased an item for $1k from a new seller on eBay through an auction(biggest mistake ever). According to the tracking information, the item was delivered on the scheduled date. However, after speaking with my postal worker, I discovered that while it was supposed to be on her route, it was not. She contacted her manager, who confirmed that the shipping label had been altered, suggesting possible fraud.
I promptly contacted eBay, and they assisted me in opening a case, reassuring me that it would be resolved in my favor due to the seller’s failure to use signature confirmation for an item valued over $1,000. I also received an email confirming this.
Unfortunately, despite this, the seller won the case. When I contacted eBay for further guidance, they suggested obtaining documentation from USPS. I explicitly requested that they not submit an appeal over the weekend since USPS is closed. However, I received an email on Sunday morning stating that my appeal had been submitted and denied again, which I never authorized. The timeframe on these emails suggest it happened while I was sleeping. I have 2-factor authentication on my account as well, so it must have been done internally at eBay.
It appears that the scammer has prevailed. I am seeking advice on how to resolve this issue. After 11 years on eBay, this is my first experience being scammed successfully. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The lady on the phone gave me pushback about giving me the info, but eventually, she confirmed that the package didn’t go to my address and agreed to email me a confirmation. I sent a screenshot of that email to eBay, along with the names and phone numbers of everyone I spoke to. eBay’s previous email said that an email from USPS would work as proof.
eBay responded to my email containing the proof, saying they would request a manual refund that would take 5-7 business days. I’ll follow up again to let you know if it’s approved or not. fingers crossed this gets approved and this is behind me!
Unfortunately, that would be your $1k courtesy refund, while your "seller" gets away to fake tracking scam again.

I understand your point, but isn’t the buyer returning what they received which is nothing?

When you report a package missing, what did you receive?
And every reason on this list requires that you return the purchase ... except one.
Because when you start a return for MISSING PARTS OR PIECES to get a refund, what are you returning?

IMHO, it is getting around the problem of eBay’s CS inadequacies by using trickery. I’d prefer to bypass eBay entirely …and phone my credit card company for the refund … rather than file a deceptive claim with eBay.
It’s fine to return an empty box when you’ve received an empty box … but not when you’ve received nothing. Again, just a preference.
BTW, the seller is often just another innocent victim in the scam. It’s often the drop-shipper or their supplier that is running the tracking scam, with the seller being an unsuspecting newbie who will likely be suspended before they understand what’s happening.

Update!
Just got an update from eBay, and they're sticking with their original decision—no refund for me. They claim there was a signature on the delivery, but there wasn't. The seller never used signature confirmation. They completely ignored the proof I gave from USPS saying it wasn't delivered to me. To top it off, the package weight is way off. It should be 2.5 lbs because the item alone is 2 lbs, but USPS said it was 1 lb. Going to try contacting eBay through Facebook. What a nightmare. Whats going on at eBay?

Sorry about your bad news. eBay is protecting eBay.
eBay is closing their eBay for business page, and you should now use the blue message button on this one:

eBay has been slow to understand and deal with this scam. ☹️
You now need to deal directly with the Fraud Department of your credit card company. They should be able to refund your money.

Update.
I wanted to provide an update on my recent eBay case. After eBay declined my appeal for a second time , I responded by refuting their decision with a screenshot from USPS showing that the tracking number lacked signature confirmation. To my surprise, eBay re-submitted the appeal.
A few days later, I noticed that the seller's account was no longer registered on eBay. I followed up with eBay's customer service chat, and they processed my refund after looking into it. Finally!
It required quite a bit of persistence and effort, or perhaps I was just fortunate. Either way, I'm relieved that it's finally resolved! Thanks everyone!
