I lost an auction today that I have held the high bid for THREE STINKING DAYS. Also I wasn't near my max bid. With ONE MINUTE left this **bleep** with a 4 feedback rating comes in bids enough to hit my max. Then bids ONE DOLLAR over my max to win and with no time for me to rebid. I saw another auction site that combated sniping by add 5 minutes to the auction if someone bid with a minute or less left in the auction. I don't remember how many times they would do it. Here's my idea: Add five minutes anytime there is a bid or bids in the last two minutes of the auction. Also add "Snip-bot" detection software as well as bans for serial snipers.
What do y'all think of my idea? Tell me. Right I am seething over this, the seller isn't answering my message, and I reported it to Ebay who agreed it looked extremely suspicious and are going to investigate. However the Ebay rep. said the sniper has already paid for the item. GRRR. >.<

That is shady AF. Because I have been searching for this items since 97 - 98 when mine was destroyed. It was a gift with sentimental value. I did look over and over IT NEVER CAME UP ON ANY SEARCH...As soon as that one came up I watched it and then I bid. So either that some good photoshopping or the seller is shady AF.

According to the listing (and bidding history shown below) is that the winning bid was placed AFTER you placed your highest bid.
The winning bid was placed over 48 hours after you bid. Had you monitored the listing until the end
Your bid: 22 Oct 2021 at 2:26:48pm PDT
Winning bid: 24 Oct 2021 at 5:32:33pm PDT
The listing ended 24 Oct 2021 at 5:33:52pm PDT so had you been online,, you would have (possibly) had over a full minute to outbid the winner WHO WON FAIR AND SQUARE.
If you need someone to be angry with, find the nearest mirror and scream at the person looking back at you.

There's nothing shady. Good grief! Another was sold on August 26 (different seller) for $19.99 plus shipping.
Maybe your search skills need honing.

What no one seems to get is that I WAS LIVE WATCHING THE AUCTION and it was 50.49 then 51.49 then auction closed. It SHOWS a minute and a half but it was much, much faster.
Everyone in this thread understands exactly what you were doing. We have all been in your shoes at one time.
Trying to react to other bids as they come in is a poor strategy, as you have discovered, for the reasons explained previously in this thread. If you had bid your maximum amount sooner, you would not have needed to watch the auction end other than to see if you had won or not.
There is no upside to bidding less than your maximum amount. And the downside is that you can lose to a bid amount that you were willing to match or beat, but that you chose not to outbid, for no good reason.
I am using a high powered Alienware laptop its one year old has an i9 processor so it wasn't my equipment. I did not have time to react.
It does not matter how fancy your computer is; if a bid comes in to a server on the other side of the world in the last seconds of an auction, you will not be able to see it before the auction ends. That is why it is critical to place your maximum bid yourself before the auction ends rather than waiting and trying to place a bid in response to another user's bid. By the time you see that you have been outbid it is often already too late.
No one is guaranteed to have the last bid, and if your strategy relies on being the last bidder, you need a new strategy.

For the record, I mentioned having bids in a local online auction that was supposed to end yesterday afternoon, but with "extended bidding" was still going on at 9pm.
Well, it's still going on at 11am, one of the lots closed to me at 2am. I'm still the lead in two others.

You had 7 full days in which to place your bid for $100.

Let me repeat myself: Give it up, folks. The OP does not want to understand.

We ALL understand that.

The timer is not 100% reliable. Your internet connection is not 100% reliable, no matter how new and powerful your computer is.
But as no one is listening that the auction was manipulated.
Wrong.
Rather I am told I am stupid, cheap, a poor loser etc.
Right.
For the record I was trying to bid $100 but auction had ended.
If you were willing to spend $100, you could have bid $100 at ANY time. You failed.
Everything is my fault
Yes, in this case, it is.
so I am deactivating my Ebay account.
That's your call.
I have decided to campaign for government regulation for Ebay.
That's hilarious.
Y'all will just say "Caveat emptor ". Ebay has pretty much become screw the buyer anyway you can mentality.
eBay has a rock-solid Money Back Guarantee to protect buyers against losing money if they buy a fake.
Pretty much Ebay has become Seller A buys item from Seller B and relists at double to quadruple the price. A $10 item now sells for $500 dollars not because it is worth it, but the guy selling paid 200 or 300 dollars for it and wants to make money. This has pretty much soured me to Ebay.
LOL.

I love swooping in at the last second to win an auction. They never even see me coming!

Someone's forcing you to pay $500 for an item worth only $10?
Oh, the horror!
But then, you were willing to pay $100 for a singing cactus plushie...
Naw, I'm not going to say anything else. Too easy.

you had all week to bid $100 but chose not to
a newbie got your goat and it does not feel good to lose to a newbie

>I lost an auction today that I have held the high bid for THREE STINKING DAYS.
Here are a few ideas I use in bidding on eBay auctions. They have worked well for me for over 20 years.
1) Never bid on an item until the last few seconds. This takes some planning and you must be awake and watching when the item closes. Never show your hand until the item has less than 15 seconds to go.
2} Because of eBay's proxy bidding system, bidding just a bit above the current high bid is useless. When you do bid, if you really want an item, bid at least twice the current high bid. Thrice would be better.
3) There are websites that will (always for a fee) do the last second bidding for you. I don't use them as I don't like giving my eBay login info to a third party.
HTH.

Stop posting bad words in Spanish here. It's still inappropriate and unacceptable on this forum...no matter what language it is.

Welcome to America's entitled, spoiled youth...over a stupid dancing cactus toy none the less. Ridiculous.
