Concern about potential bogus tracking.

I recently purchased a relatively expensive item with Best Offer.  The purchase was made about 4am.  Within 10min the offer was accepted and in 5min was listed as Shipped but "Untracked".  This afternoon the seller sent me a tracking number via Ebay's chat system.  It's not been attached to nor associated with my purchase, as of yet.  My concern is this is one of those "just send something to somewhere in the same town" so it'll show as something delivered.

Does this look suspicious to anyone?  Is there anything I can do in the meantime to proactively prepare for this to go bad?  Seller has good feedback within the year.

Thank you.

Until something happens or not, not much you can do but wait.

Have a great day.

@capital_nick

I've had this happen numerous times, with no delivery issues.  I've had sellers message me with tracking on the site privately, as well as through email.  This has been especially true in the high dollar item category, which I'm guilty of purchasing in on many occasions.  It seems the high end sellers (ones I've dealt with) are reluctant to post tracking on an item through standard channels on ebay, for fear that nefarious types are able to 'hack in' and see what you purchased and where it's going, then dispatching someone to grab en route or through porch piracy.  Whether or not that's a reality, I don't know, but at times where a couple grand is in the offing, it makes me sleep better.

Re: Concern about potential bogus tracking.

  If they did not purchase the shipping through eBay, they would have to enter it by hand. They might not know how to do that?    Does not sound like a fake tracking number scam.

Re: Concern about potential bogus tracking.

If seller has good feedbacks from buyers within a month or two...I wouldn't worry.

I type in all my tracking numbers...such a pain as I do not use eBay labels. But I type in the tracking number usually within a day on eBay item.

That makes me feel better.  I just don't know why they wouldn't update the tracking for the actual order.  Which might work in my favor if this goes foul.

Re: Concern about potential bogus tracking.

Perhaps.  They have a few hundred feedback and have been on Ebay for a while, so I dunno.
