Buying older, hard-to-find CD from Europe

Has anyone had experience buying rare CDs from another country?

I have found an older CD that is really hard to find at a really good price from three different sellers, two in Hungary and one in Romania. I want to buy, but I'm hesitant because I know that some sellers could possibly be selling fakes.

The sellers have mostly positive feedback (all around 94-100%), especially good feedback from other people that have bought the same product from them. However, some of the feedback mentions "not original" or "fake".

Another thing that makes me hesitant is that the all the sellers have the item marked as brand new. Now, the CD was originally released in 2006, so either these have sat unused all that time, they were used and resealed, or they are fake.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Re: Buying older, hard-to-find CD from Europe

I would not trust any seller with a FB lower than 98% . For Asian sellers, nothing below 99%. So 94% is terrible.

I have bought CDs by local artists which were donated to thrifts by record shops after being unsold for 15-20 years.  Rare often means "not popular".  A record that is in demand might be faked (like the Beatles "butcher" album cover. yes, I am old) but not a small time group that never really broke out.
Rare does not mean valuable.

But if there are only 50 of the CD sealed and available worldwide, but 51 fans are looking for it, the price can soar.

Are the rare CDs by artists from the country of the seller?

Most CDs are made in Asia, and shipped to wherever the market is strongest. Usually the jacket art is in the language of the country where it is meant to be sold.

If the jacket is in German and the artist European, there is a better chance that the Hungarian seller bought it new than if it is in English and by a US artist.

Re: Buying older, hard-to-find CD from Europe

I have bought from other American sellers and some from the UK before that had feedback percentage scores in the low to mid 90s. I have had very few problems and those that I did have were quickly resolved.

No, the band is definitely an American group. The CD is actually the Jonas Brothers debut album, which is really hard to find these days.

Some have a basic picture of the front cover, the others have actual pictures of the back of the cover with the track listing, and everything seems to be listed in English.  I wouldn't want a Romanian or Hungarian language edition of the album, because I wouldn't understand it.

A Romanian or Hungarian copy of the album wouldn’t mean the songs would be in Romanian or Hungarian, simply that the album was released in one of those country. International releases often are sought after because they sometimes contain extra songs or different artwork.

Re: Buying older, hard-to-find CD from Europe

First, go to a listing that is selling at market rate. Look at the back of the case.

Now go to one of the Eastern European bootleg listings that are selling for less than 20% of market rate, and look at the back of those cases.

You will see the blank area on the back of the bootleg where the FBI warning should be. Buyers are getting exactly what they are paying for.

I had that album when I lived in Tucson, Arizona.  Unfortunately, it got misplaced in the move to northern California, and then southern California.
