Buying computers on Ebay

I purchased an advertised new in box laptop.  Later I checked with the manufacture about the warranty.  They provide a 1 year factory warranty.  When I checked the warranty online it shows that it expires in 3 months.

The manufacture has not budged on changing the expiration date since I bought it from Ebay.  Ebay should require all sellers to make it clear that the warranty may not be for the manufacturers specified time.  Thus the buyer may end up paying more for the product than one would expect because they have to buy a warranty.

The sellers only comment to me is that the buyer should buy a Squaretrade warranty from Ebay.

This sounds like pure fraud to me on Ebay annd the sellers part..

Did the seller specify that the warranty was good for a year in his listing? Most Ebay warranties are not worth the paper they are written on..warranties are usually only good when provided by the mgfr.

Most items on ebay have no warranty. For some you can purchase one. Don't know how good those are.

it is not fraud. The seller did not advertise a 1 year warranty.

@mor-mod-0tr2fz - I'm sorry but I disagree with you. There is an onus on the buyer as well. If you purchase a new laptop you have to realize that it only means the laptop was never opened or used. It doesn't mean you would be entitled to all warranty privileges from the manufacturer because you have no way of knowing how long the laptop has sat in that unopened box. Buying in a retail store is different because they use the 1 yr warranty as a selling point and you have not indicated that was the case in your posting.

There is no reason for the manufacturer to alter the warranty as that was your choice to purchase the laptop when you did. As well this platform cannot vouch for any manufacturer warranties on any items sold on here. Look I'm also a buyer so I get why you feel the way that you do but you still need to understand this is a two way street. You also have a responsibility to review your items and take timelines into consideration before you make your purchase. So sorry to disagree with you and I wish you all the best.

Very few warranties pass from the original owner down to subsequent owners. Even most "for the life of the XXXXX" warranties require a proof of purchase from an authorized dealer/seller.

Ordinarily manufacturer's warranties are not transferable.  So if the seller was not an authorized retailer, the manufacturer's warranty would end with him.

Personally, I probably wouldn't attempt to purchase electronics on eBay.  They are high scam items and I find it much better to buy from the manufacture's site or that of an established retailer if I can't go to their store.

You need a pc tech to observe your computer. In the meantime, just manually list your items the old style way in case you really want a number of those listings up here.

Computers can be resold and new owners will receive the remainder of the warrantee. I used to sell mainly new electronics on ebay and would list the amount of time left for the remainder of any warranties that were still valid. All my receipts were from authorized retailers. If a buyer contacted me with a problem I would send them the receipt. I didn't include them with item delivery because the receipts had the price I actually paid. Never was a problem.

I mainly buy used laptops on ebay now and rarely are they scammers. Once in awhile I get one that has the wrong description or didn't disclose damages plus the occasional, bid was too low so they don't ship, or say I requested to cancel...I find the most scammers when I buy digital products like software product keys.

So you have 3 out of the 12 months left of the mfr's warranty. If I were you I would gamble on not buying a warranty. if you don't have a problem within the first three months the laptop will probably last for many years without having issues. Try to use it as much as possible during these 3 months to make sure everything is working properly. And whatever you do, do NOT buy a squaretrade warranty unless you want to waste your money. I'm a laptop repair tech, if you have an issue after 3 months, message me here, I will do my best to help you.

I forgot to mention in my last post. If you paid through paypal you have up to 180 days for a claim and you have a minimum of 6 months from you credit card too, some cards are longer.
