I ordered a computer from a seller on Sept 23 and received it Oct 6. A few days afterwards, I realized there were problems with the order and specifically it was the wrong computer. I sent three messages to the seller and received one message in return suggesting I try to resolve the problem on my end. I replied saying that I wanted a refund. No answer. When I finally tried to put in a refund request to eBay, I kept getting a message saying that the return window had closed. But the description of the item says that the return window closes on November 18th,
I pointed this out to two eBay customer agents who saw the same date and said they would try to see what they could do. The second agent suggested I file an official complaint (something like the violation of eBay policies). Which I did. After a week I haven't heard a thing from eBay. Of course the Nov 18 deadline has passed. Today (Nov 21) I spoke to an eBay agent who looked at the file and said the the two previous agents had tried to file return requests that has been refused because of the eBay Nov, 6 deadline (30 days after delivery). So she suggested I explore "external" options such as calling my credit card company.
I smell a rat here. I feel the the seller and eBay dragged their feet to run out the clock. Even though I raised these issues first with the seller and then with eBay within the return date indicated by the seller, now everybody seems to be saying it's too late. At one point the seller asked me for my address although I would assume they have it on file. I never heard from the seller again. The whole thing smells of a scam. Any ideas what can I do?

As per the Ebay Money Back Guarantee, you had 30 days from date of delivery to file the Return Request. Whoever told you otherwise was WRONG.
You can turn to Paypal or your funding source to file a dispute, depending on how you paid for the item.

Thanks for the reply. But I want to emphasize that it was the seller who advertised the incorrect return window date, i.e. later than the official eBay date. It's still visible on my file. I'm not going to make a big fuss out of this but I doubt I'll ever use eBay again.

Unfortunately, there is no "rat" here. Sellers have no control over when a package is opened by a customer and eBay allows 30 days from the confirmed delivery date to file a return claim. For an item not as described or arrived damage you do not have to contact the Seller, just file a return through eBay, you will get a pre-paid label for the return shipment and the claim steps will assist you pursuing a refund.
PayPal allows 180 days from the date of purchase to file a return but you will pay the return shipping and not get that refunded.
Credit cards allow charge backs in certain scenarios if your purchased that way.

Thanks for your reply. I understand eBay's policy but the point I am making is that the seller misled me by putting in the item description a return window date that was 12 days later than the eBay date. I have it in front of me. If there had been no date, I would have used the eBay date. I just want people to be aware of the misleading information here. I'll pursue the matter with my credit card provider.

Just to let everyone know that my credit card company has just refunded me while they investigate the matter over the coming months. We'll see how it all ends. Thanks to everyone.
