Is there a way to find out what an item sold for in the past?

Just asking. When a seller lists an item that states, let's say, $50 or best offer, and it doesn't sell at auction, it seems to me they are saying they are willing to accept the best offer, no matter what it is, and sell it to whomever made the offer...
