I've noticed that listings are ending, showing SOLD, 30 seconds ahead of time. Purposely of some kind of glitch? E-bay's response that I should learn about last minute bidding, sniping, doesn't make sense. I've been bidding on E-bay for over 20 years and have "sniped" with the best of them. I bid mostly on HO model trains.

Can you provide an example item # where this has happened?

The countdown you see is not an accurate measure of how much time you have left to submit a bid for it to be received in time before the end. Has never been (I tested the countdown when it first came out and found it slow by several seconds) and it has been especially glitchy the past few months. I highly recommend using a snipe service which uses an eBay API to put in last minute bids.
OR a seller can chose to end the auction early at any time with the sale to the current leader at the current bid amount (possibly doesn't like snipers).
