What to do if USPS Claims I signed for a package when I did not sign/nor receive it?

I purchased an item on eBay that was fairly valuable so the seller sent it via USPS and had Signature confirmation on it, which is great. However, today USPS claims they delivered it and that I signed for it when I did not sign for it nor receive it....

Is it safe to use seller's return label outside of eBay returns system? Any drawbacks?

Not a huge deal, but I need to return a defective item to a reputable seller on eBay that sells a lot and has good feedback. They asked me via eBay messages to not open up a return through eBay and to just return the item to them using their shipping...
