USPS in trouble

I don't know if this link will work if you do not subscribe to the Washington Post but it says the revenue for the USPS has collapsed due to Covid and if they do not get an infusion of funding from the Federal government they could close as early as June.  My husband says Republicans hate the Post Office and want to see it go away, why I can't imagine.

And if anything, MORE packages will be delivered during this time. More people are shopping online.

Yup, but for us,...........................  everything is coming by UPS & FedEx.

Shipping for some of the things that I get, if shipped by USPS,  would not happen.   $35-45 purchase, 15#, 16#, 26# from Wally, over 1 cu. ft., even from only 1 state away, is not going to ship free by USPS.

...because of competing with USPS, UPS and FedEx give you some slacks...when USPS is out of that circle, you will see "the pain on your neck" to deal with their raising cost of shipping...

...it's all about business...Business 101...!

...may I add one more thing into your comment...?

...every election years, USPS has to deliver political ads as flyers, pamphlets, postcards, ballots...etc...any sort of that...FREE...NO CHARGE...it was a binding contract with our Government...the cost any politician has to pay is the cost of printing to the public company...

Are you asking  why republicans "hate the Post Office and want to see it go away"?

Or are you asking why your husband would say that?

Correct - but only because Fed Ex and UPS can give a volume shipper like that unreal rates. The DC loads the truck - all UPS and Fed Ex do is pick it up and then it goes to an automated hub.

Agree,    my post was just pointing out that for me online purchasing out of the ordinary because of this situation will be unlikely to increase USPS revenue.

I have a part coming tomorrow via UPS. It is something that under normal circumstances I would get used. I would go get it myself.

1st, one source of the part has ceased operations during the pandemic. 2nd, another source may, or not be operating, but at this time when I am attempting to get my wife (in the high at-risk group) to "shelter in", it would be hard to justify my travels to remove a part from a vehicle that has possibly recently been touched/sneezed on/coughed on/ spit upon by many individuals.

I, for my person, am not living in fear of this virus. I can be aware of what I am doing.  I can practice social distancing. I can wash my hands.

If I try to justify traveling it will be increasingly difficult to continue to convince my wife how serious this is.   She wants some shallots for a salad, a cheese cake from Wally, and banana nut bread from a specific grocery store.

I don't want to see anyone lost from this, but more so, I do not want my wife to be the one to increase the toll in the US from 99,999 to that projected 100,000 mark.

Because they want to make money off of everything, even public goods (or quasi-public goods) like fire departments, public education, and national parks, that no rational person wants privatized because they instinctively know it wouldn't be good for them, for the country, or for society.

USPS is semi-nationalized because that's what's efficient. Nobody can or will beat their price for general delivery. Pray that USPS stays afloat.

Agree 100%.  Despite being hamstrung by issues already discussed, the USPS does one heck of a job getting huge volumes of mail delivered in a timely manner.

Obviously, they are not 100 percent perfect, but I bet they are closer than many eBay sellers.  My loss rate is less than 1/10 of 1%.  (probably closer to 1/100 of 1%.)

A 16.1 oz package going from my home to 12 miles down the street now costs over $7. A 1 oz package going from my house to the west coast is now over $3. Gas is the cheapest its been now since first class packages 1-16 oz were $1.91 anywhere in the U.S. Simple priority was $3.50 to $4.00 and now its $5.75 to $15.

If they cant figure out how to get it done like the rest of us then.......see ya, wouldnt wanna be ya.
