Looking to make profit on coins

I was wondering if I could get any input on what coins to buy on the open market (limited budget) to sell on ebay that might make the most profit? I've noticed that circulated common barber dimes with full rims seem to get ridiculously high bids on ebay...any others? thanks

I have found that one way to make a high potential profit is to buy commemorative coins from the United States Mint itself. If the coin is deemed popular by the collecting community, it will go for quite a bit of money on eBay. For example, I bought the Benjamin Franklin proof coins from the Mint when they came out. Several weeks later the Mint sold out. Now, those coins are going for double what I paid for them. Other such coins include the 50 States Quarters (in Silver), the 230th Anniversary of the Marine Corps, and the American Buffalo Silver Dollar. While you can make money by attempting to find older rare U.S. coins, it will be much more time consuming. A coin that is about to be released by the Mint could be another valuable coin that you may want to look at getting. This August the 15, at noon, the Mint will be releasing a proof silver dollar of the San Fransisco Mint. I believe that it will become quite valuable. It will retail at $35 for the proof coin. I highly suggest getting it. One more way is to have your coins graded. It can be a risky business because it costs some considerable money to get a coin graded. However, if it is a valuable coin and receives a high grade, the profits can be large. Once again, look deeply into the grading process if you think that may be something that you want to do. I don't do it because of the risks. I hope that information helps you.

Jonesie's advice seems very sound. The coins from the US Mint always sell out quickly, and become highly sought after. The prices on eBay for those sold out coins can be extraordinary. Also, silver continues to rise overall, and is probably a good choice. The 1 oz coins I bought for $6 to $8 a piece several years ago are worth between $11 and $12 in silver value alone these days. Gold is bit pricey and more volatile. I think it was up over $800 an ounce, but is back down to close to $600. Of course that 1oz gold coin I bought at $350 is worth more. If I'd had a lot of those....

I agree with everything except for the state quarters..I think they've fizzled..other than the 99 silver, 01 silver and maybe one other year...I bought all 5 2000 silver quarters in the case for around 13 dollars including shipping so I doubt much if any profit was made on that sale

All the advise is good here, but some years the Proof and Mint Sets, dont sell out that fast, but are still sound investments. I suggest trying to get first year issues of up and coming series. Both the Peace Nickels, and 1999 quartes, are hot, and so are most other first year coins. I have heard of new dollar coins in 2007, possiblly new lincoln cent in 2009, and did here about quarters for US territoies. Also you might try the BEP (Bureau of Engraving and Printing at http://www.moneyfactory.gov/store/index.cfm/9. I purchased the Texas Coin and Currency Set in July, that cost $129.95 (with S&H), and now sells for $220-250. Other items from them, which are limited to small quanities, are good investmens too. They only made 2000 Texas Coin and Currency Sets, and there was a limit of 5 per customer.

You could also purchase Morgan dollars, Mercury Dimes, and Walking Hafl Dollar, for more of a long term investment. I even sugest that you might try Star bills. Just buy the 10 consecutive one dollar star notes, and save them for 5-10 years, and most likly you can sell them for 3-5 times the amount you payed, maybe more.

Now here is my question if a gold ounce was worth $350 pre 9/11, and is now worth $625, did you really make money? Pre 9/11 a busk could buy a gallon of gas, but now can just buy a third of a gallon. Over all the cost is higher today. You might of made a $100. But you didn't make that $300 you thought you did.

well, you don't buy gold to make huge profits, you buy to protect against inflation, and profit is secondary concern, so, by that measure, what would a $350 investment in the stock market, as a whole, be worth today?, I think the gold buyers win that one

No body mentioned the stock market, but since you brought it up, if you where to go back and pick out any 10 year span, you should notice that there will be an 10% increase over all, also if you where to get lucky, as i have done you can triple your money in less then a year, but at the same token you can loose big. Honestly, I invest in silver because it has tripled, as for gold, it has only doubled since pre 9/11.

Right on jerbear5150, Inflation, if we listened to the White House boys inflation would be non-existent. Yea' we all believe the White House boys and I've got a bridge for sale too. Anyway jerbear5150 is correct, gold and silver are strong economic indicaters. When you see gold and silver increase in value it pretty much means that our paper currency isn't worth squat. Would you rather have $20.00 paper or a $20.00 gold piece in your hand? When it comes right down to it gold is valuable silver is valuable always has been always will be. Since the beginning in our faded past if you didn't have gold or silver the merchants ran a credit line if you were lucky, and as we all know credit is a destroyer and paid in full is a breath of fresh air. If Wall Street crashed again and America went toes up gold and silver coins, bullion, inquets what ever....will always buy, buy, buy. Can we really put a price on survival?

It's hard to make money with any coin on eBay. Because you have all these fu@king morons selling two thousand dollar coins for a dollar.. The idiots ruined it for everybody. I spent years in years and years. Collecting these coins that sell at heritage for 5 thousand dollars Try to listen on eBay for a couple of grand.or even a couple  hundred bucks Then you look down the list and their is a  bunch of morons selling the same coin for a dollar
