Figures makeover

Anyone else hating the do-over lumping all Figure kits, be they soldiers, character figures, sci-fi, monsters, or what-have-you into one "Figure" category? I HATE IT. I have to scroll through endless Gundam  and loads of commercial dealers, finally giving up after four or five pages. It used to be easy to locate interesting items from individual sellers, exclusively by SUBJECT MATTER, but now the site is flooded with Asian recasts and model kits that are mainly Sci-Fi or softcore Anime. What was broke? Who thought it needed to be fixed? Worse, who thinks this is an improvement? Put it back the way it was, eBay!

@seewantmusthaveitnow,

Nothing was broken before, that's why it was "fixed" until it was broken.  It you tell us what it is you are searching for we should be able to help you refine your searches to get rid of most of the irrelevant results.

We can't help you get rid of the high volume sellers of reproduced figures, but if many of those listings are chinese sellers, you can use the "Distance from [   ]  to [   ] box, or U.S. only options in the left hand column  to eliminate them.

Re: Figures makeover

Instead of browsing the entire category, you should be able to search and find the items you are interested in by choosing appropriate keywords, changing the category if necessary and then using the category specific filters on the left side of the search results page to limit your results.

What subject matter are you interested in finding?

Try starting your search using the name of the former category as your keyword or keywords if you are not searching for a specific item.

Re: Figures makeover

Sounds great. Sounds easy. Doesn't work that way. I've been buying dolls on eBay since 1996. Trust me, I know how to search. When trying to find dolls and related items no amount of filtering *ever* gets you to a usable list. Ever. And I'm frankly getting just an eensy bit tired of being told "There, there, it's okay. Just tell us what you're searching for and we'll tell you how to make it all perfect again."

Re: Figures makeover

While it is not always possible to refine a search to the point where only items interest turn up in the results, if -- like the OP -- you find yourself wading through pages of items that have nothing to do with what you are looking for, such as gundam figures when you are searching for WWII military models, then there are likely things you can do to refine your search further to eliminate the unwanted results.

To a certain extent you are limited by the categories and filter options that eBay provides. You are also limited by the details that the seller includes in the listing. If you are looking for a particular doll made in a particular year, but the seller fails to include any date information in the listing, then you may have difficulty finding that listing without going through lots of others as well.

You may know how to search, but many users search in different ways and some rely on specific techniques exclusively and ignore others that might be more effective. If users are reliant on browsing categories, then the category reorganization that eBay is undergoing can make things much harder.

Often users are quite certain that it is impossible to limit searches without using the old categories that eBay has removed. In some cases, such as involving classic car parts, there are very few ways to identify such items in a general way. But for many items in the trains and models categories, there are item-specifics that, if included by the seller when creating the listing, can be found using keywords or filters. So it is still possible to search for and find only N-scale train models, even though there is no longer a specific category just for that scale.

While many users are justifiably upset at the results of the changes that eBay has made, some are actually quite thankful when a search technique suggestion works to make a frequently-used search much more effective.

Re: Figures makeover

Requiring more details in listing data is contradictory to using upper level category searches.

In all cases, creating two categories for figure kits is also counterintuitive to streamlining searches. Recommend moving "Figures and People" out of Tools and simply incorporate those listings in the upper level category, Figures.

Re: Figures makeover

Response overlooks buyer behavior of "browsing" items of a particular type (category) that generates impulse buys.

Not all buyers begin a search with a specific figure, doll, scale model in mind.

It is still possible to perform a general search or to combine browsing a category with the use of a filter.

Not all buyers begin a search with a specific figure, doll, scale model in mind.

No one in this thread is suggesting that buyers can or should only search one way.

This discussion is about avoiding certain unwanted results when searching or browsing. Absent the specific individual categories that previously could be browsed, filters can be used to avoid many unwanted listings -- regardless of how specific or general a search is.

If you are having problems with a particular search or while browsing a category, please provide some details of what you are looking for and what you are trying to avoid if you want specific recommendations rather than general search suggestions.

@wwii_buff2011,

Instead of replying to topics that are close to a year old, why not start a new one with examples of the searches you are having trouble with?
