Re: wet package

It isn't that hard to package something to withstand being rained on. Plastic is cheap.

IMO, the seller.  It has happened to me - postman leaves a package right on the edge of a covered porch.  Rain ruins the package - wouldn’t have if he had pushed it it just two extra feet.

How do you figure this is the seller's responsibility?

Because the carrier used didn’t put the package in the available  secure place.  If I have a large covered porch, and the postman puts the package where it is partly off one edge of the porch, exposing the package to the rain, I’m calling that a delivery issue, not a secure place issue with the buyer.

Maybe jasmen@ebay or velvet@ebay  could clarify eBay's position on whether a seller is responsible for a carrier leaving a package exposed to the rain. Does eBay consider that a "delivery issue" the seller would be responsible for?

Re: wet package

With Amazon they replace, with ebay if item is wet or damaged from water file SNAD. otherwise if item is OK use it

Re: wet package

I believe that the seller is responsible. I assume it will be raining and I ship everything in a waterproof poly mailer and protected with cardboard. In 22 years I have had one damage claim because of vehicular packageslaughter.

Yep, I've had that exact situation happen. We have a covered porch. A package that is placed on the covered porch will be protected just fine from the rain and any elements.

We had a sub carrier who would just sling packages onto the stairs leading up to the porch rather than walking the extra three feet to place them on the porch itself. I took photos of the packages sitting on the stairs in front of the covered porch and took them to my local post office to show the Postmaster.

Needless to say, it never happened again after that.

Re: wet package

We had this happen with UPS.

We have a covered porch and the "wonder"  UPS driver left it in the middle of the walk.  2 hrs post delivery - it snowed.

We found our parcel covered in ice/snow and the cardboard box and contents sopping wet.

We called UPS to complain and they asked for tracking number, pix of label and box and contents, proof of purchase, damaged/wet contents and value.

We filled out an online form and attached everything.  Took about 4 weeks and they paid us $104.

Seller needs to call postmaster at PO that delivered the parcel and Buyer will need to have pix/proof.

Issue is the Seller's - no different than if they hand your Buyer a parcel that has been shredded by a USPS sorting machine.    Not going to be in the condition ordered/paid for.

USPS will address the issues created by their delivery personnel.  But it will take some work to get there.  If your Buyer no longer has the box/damaged contents, e-Bay or their CC, will side with the Buyer.

As a Seller, why would you not work to assist your Buyer?

Seller chooses the "shipper", not the Buyer.

Re: wet package

F m y Tracking says -I- am getting a pkg, I put a COVERED PLASTIC TOTE w a note for Carrier... I would NEVER expect the Seller / Shipper to know it would rain, snow, etc.

This is a post-delivery issue. The package was fine until after it was delivered. No different than if the package was stolen after delivery. The seller would not be responsible for that either.

Re: wet package

I will say that as a seller, I do try to package knowing that USPS may indeed leave the pkg in the rain or snow.  I didn't always do that b/c I haven't  had an issue at any of my last 3 houses & it never occurred to me that a carrier would be dumb enough to leave a pkg in the rain, but my sister once asked me to wrap everything in a pkg in a plastic bag b/c her carrier always leaves stuff in the rain & I realized she must not be alone, so I started doing it for all my pkgs.

They may not withstand a hurricane, but s/b able to handle an average rainstorm & I will say that judging by my purchases, a lot of sellers don't do even the basics for protection.

Re: wet package

Depends on who received it?  The person at the delivery address is responsible to make sure the mail is in a secure, dry, theft free place.

Re: wet package

Bottom line - Seller is NOT responsible, BUT if buyer files INAD....... Guess what?

You didn't say whether you're the buyer or the seller, but, since this is the Selling board, I'll assume you are indeed the seller.

It's the buyer's responsibility to provide a safe place for delivery of a package.

I remember a thread  from many moons past, we discussed this.  Is there actually verbiage that states, "It's the buyer's responsibility to provide a safe place for delivery of a package." ???
