shipping costs

Hi- I was wondering if anyone could help me. I was contacted by a prospective buyer who asked if I made a typo in my listing about the shipping cost. I put in the item, and it was showing me $16 plus for expedited shipping, which I realized was from my town. She told me that from Terrance,Cal where she is, the cost is coming up as over $57 to ship this hand bag weighing 3.11 ounces. I tried to change it from Priority to Parcel Select to see if it would be cheaper. It would not allow me to revise the item. The item is promoted. I don't know if this has anything to do with it. The buyer also advised that many of my bags are showing similar crazy high shipping costs, which is why maybe they are not selling. I tried USPS online to see if there is a flat rate box but none listed are large enough ,19x14x7. I am on the East Coast. As soon as I sell to someone west of the Mississippi the costs sky rocket. Fed Ex or UPS prices do not seem to be better. This is not the first sale I will lose because of it.I am gave up being Top Rated  Plus because I can't afford to pay these outrageous costs if the buyer decides to return. Thanks for any ideas.

The size of your box (dimensions) is the problem.  It is over one cubic foot so the rates are hit with the dimensional increase.  If you can safely ship the purse in a smaller box that isn't oversize, you would be helped greatly in cost.

If it will not let you revise it, you can end the listing and add the Parcel Select as a choice.

When I have Parcel, and Priority as choices I do the Parcel first. That is the shipping cost that will show in search.

That $57 is a lot for a 4 pound package. Looks like size is  skewing the cost.  4 pounds to zone 8 online cost is  $21.60, and retail ......... what the buyer would see if you don't pass along discounts is .... $25.45

Sqeeze it into a plain brown box .

Parcel under the cubic foot ...............  $13.17

I would love to, but it is a large tote bag, and if I put it in a box that is smaller, it will get crushed, and buyers often complain about that and want to return. I will go and explore my box stash, and see what I can do. Do you have any ideas why it won't let me revise the item to check how much Parcel Select would be?I have been selling for a decade, but try to keep it simple as I am not the most tech savvy, and EBAY is constantly changing rules and policies, mostly to seller's detriment. Thanks so much for your help.

this is a really good explanation to help you decide box size and price

Note that to qualify for Cubic rates, the maximum size for any dimension is 18".

And as an aside;

I did not go beyond the 1st page displayed to me (60 items), but just to note, item 372633339566 is not going to ship to zone 8 or anyplace else for $3.18  (1st Class package starts at $3.59 , 4 ounces to Zone 1)

You should be able to easily revise your shipping on the listing page edit

!ebay-shipping-delete-add.jpg

You can delete a service (cursor drop down box) on 3 dots

or you can "Add Services" which will show you a popup of options available to you.

(this page is fixed, it should be the same for calculated)

also, regarding my other post

I am not positive if ebay labels are offering cubic shipping rates yet

A package that's 19x14x7 has a volume of 1862 cubic inches, so it's over the 1728 cubic inch volume of one cubic foot.  The USPS formula for "dimensional weight" says it will ship at the 12-pound rate.

But if you can decrease the package volume just a little bit, you can get it below 1728 cubic inches, so it will ship strictly by weight.   Getting the thickness down from 7 inches to 6 will do it, giving you a volume of 1596 cubic inches. USPS rounds of dimensions to the nearest inch, so even 6.4 inches would qualify.

Parcel Select would cost less than Priority, but it follows the same rules for dimensional weight, so it won't help as much as reducing the box size would.  You can figure alternative shipping costs using eBay's shipping calculator:

http://www.ebay.com/shp/Calculator

Listings can't be revised if they have an active offer or counteroffer. Auction-format listings can't be revised during the final 12 hours, and I wouldn't be surprised if eBay's programming has also frozen fixed price listings that have less than 12 hours left before their monthly rollover.

Before I'd offer Parcel on an expensive item,  which is not insured, I'd try UPS rates.  Also, I'm not sure, but I believe Pirate Ship offers dimensional rates.

Just be sure to enter the tracking on ebay if it does not transfer automatically.

You can purchase insurance if you ship via Parcel Select; the $100 of coverage that you'd automatically get with Priority costs $3.40.

The Priority Cubic rates that are offered by Pirateship are for packages much smaller than the OP's.

Hi, and I thank each person who has replied to me. I am so frustrated with this, and I just spent an hour trying to get EBAY help, which was,  as usual, a waste of time and effort. I checked the cost options for Parcel Select, UPS ground, and Fed EX. Parcel Select is just over $20. Any time I have sent anything that way, I always make sure there is tracking and insurance added. UPS was $40 and Fed EX $43. I am not familiar with Pirateship. So, I tried for a while to change the shipping in the listing, was having no luck, and finally my son fiddled with it and was able to get the 4 options to show in a drop down so the buyer could choose. We revised the listing to reflect this. I messaged her to tell her.She messaged me back to say that she now can see the options, but there is nothing for her to click on to make a choice. She sent me a picture. So I called EBAY. The woman had no clue. She said the buyer can not have options under EBAY International shipping. I told her the buyer is in the US and so am I. Nothing is international. They just sent me an email to review the customer service. My iffy blood pressure is going through the roof.

Also, I forgot to say that it is a Buy It Now listing and no offer was made yet. The prospective buyer's initial question was whether there was a typo on my part as she could not believe the over $57 priority cost was accurate.

@dyvette52

listing # so others can see what is coming up?

I looked before, and there were, as said, more than one with $$$ for shipping to Zone 8, but not sure which one you changed to see what happened with shipping options.  The ones I had look at are still big $$$ to Zone 8

I see a large "Coach" bag that is $163

Pirateship is an online postage seller which will not get you better prices in this particular situation, so don't worry about them for now.

All USPS package postage automatically  includes tracking at no additional cost.

As noted in the previous post, it would be helpful if you'd share a link to the listing, or the listing number, so we can see it.
