I have a buyer that claims the item he received (#302331277503) is not as described (says it is a different gauge) and is requesting a return and refund but I strongly believe he is mistaken - I believe it to be exactly the item I described. I have messaged him concerning this. Am I obligated to pay the return shipping if the error is his and not mine? How is best to resolve this?

The only way to prove it was his error is to get him to admit it in a message. That is unlikely to happen. Besides, you only believe you are correct. You have to be positive.

I am emailing him and he has sent photographs to back his claim but they do not do so. Also indicates to me he doesn't really know much about the product - I do.

You are not understanding the process for a claim of Not As Described. It doesn't matter if the buyer is correct or mistaken. It doesn't matter if he is truthful or if he is lying. You have NO CHOICE, no recourse. You MUST accept the return and issue a pre-paid return label.
The alternative is that the buyer will "ask eBay to step in", at which point eBay will either send him a return label and bill you for it or will give him a full refund (from your account) and let him keep the item. The latter is most likely. In addition, they will give you a MAJOR defect called "case closed without seller resolution". A couple of those in a year, depending on your volume of sales, will get you suspended permanently from selling.
Don't be stubborn, accept the return NOW.

Its a he said she said dispute and ebay generally finds for the buyer to retain them.Does not matter what you know only what you can prove.

It's not that the gauge is different from what you said, it's that the gauge is different from what the buyer imagined it to be. Ridiculous? you bet! Now accept the return and pony up the shipping cost to get your item back, because resistance is futile.
