Hello I am somewhat new to selling on ebay but have been a member for a really long time. I have a customer that received a game controller, So this controller has alot of electronics and drivers, firmware. So when i received it i ran all the test on it plugged into computer and video game system all was working great- mine you i took full video of the item in working condition. So he received the item yesterday and states he played it for 20 mins and it shut down on him and now he has to tap the unit to get it work. the listing was for no returns and have tried to work with the guy as i bought shipping insurance on the item, He stated box looked good, But i contacted the usps to see about filing a claim as this might have been damaged in shipping. My concern is if i take the return and he could send back the wrong item or send back his other controller that is damaged. I just want to know where i stand with this? and can i do it where if i take the return and it does not refund till i receive the item?

Hopefully I am covering all your comments and questions:
i contacted the usps to see about filing a claim as this might have been damaged in shipping.
This is not a USPS insurance issue because the box has no damage. Insurance does not cover g-forces due to dropping.
So he received the item yesterday and states he played it for 20 mins and it shut down on him and now he has to tap the unit to get it work.
Electronic items may work cold, or after sitting for a while, and they don't display problems until being used for a while. It sounds like this item has a defect.
i took full video of the item in working condition
This can only be used for your personal viewing pleasure. Videos and pictures do not give you any protections.
the listing was for no returns
You don't have to accept a return, but if the buyer files a Money Back Guarantee claim (that is, he claims the item is defective), then you have to fully refund the buyer ... alternatively, you can pay for return shipping and get the item back before refunding the buyer fully.
My concern is if i take the return and he could send back the wrong item or send back his other controller that is damaged.
That is always a possibility, but the vast majority of buyers on eBay are not trying to scam you.
I just want to know where i stand with this? and can i do it where if i take the return and it does not refund till i receive the item?
If I understand you correctly, you are correct. If you want to pay to have the item returned to you, then you do not refund until the item has been received.

When taking these returns, I tell the buyer "Do me a favor and check that it's serial number ABCD-1234 you're sending back to me." This gently puts them on notice that I'll be expecting my item.
And yes, you don't refund until after return tracking shows Delivered back to you.

The truth is most buyers return the same item. There are a few scammers out there too. Not much you can do about it until you get it back. You will have to refund and if needed appeal the case if same item not received back.

Majority no. Unfortunately ebays one size fits all "buyer wins" even if they tell you they are cheating you has made every single return a red flag scenario.
Ebay is a hostile environment for noobs and low volume sellers...also noobs and low volume sellers are easy prey for the users that can game the system on a system that is rigged in favor of cheaters.
We larger volume sellers can make it back up in volume and in the long view it is still worth the effort....for now.
OP, it is up to you is the hassle is worth the effort to get back a broken controller that was your or get back a broken controller that was his.

The best thing I have ever done with ebay sales is if there is a serial number on it I make a note of it before shipping. It has saved me thousands, in my business I can email the serial number to the manufacturer and they can tell me the name, email and IP address of the person that used it (you have to register to turn it on). It has helped me with both returns as well as item not received cases.
nothing brings me more joy than the silence of a scammer when they claim the $500 item shows delivered but they didn't receive it and I respond back with a screenshot of them registering the product hours after delivery.
i'd pay the return shipping and see what comes back. make a recording of you opening the box, it might help.
