Why does my item show lowest calculated shipping amount?

I am selling an item that weighs 40lbs and is 20x20x10. When I check the UPS ground calculated shipping it shows a span of roughly $35-300. So I did some sleuthing and the $35 is if the item is nearest me. It makes sense, right? However, after I listed the item, when I check the listing itself, as how others see it, it just says shipping is $34.27. It does NOT show that it could cost the buyer much more if say they live on the west coast (I am on the east coast).

I recently had to eat some shipping costs because I sold an item to California and the shipping that ebay said it was was $16 short. This is a heavy item. I don't want someone who may bid on it to think it's gonna cost them $34 when it could potentially be vastly more than that. Here is the listing in question if this helps. When I go into it to revise it, for me it shows calculated shipping. But to a potential bidder it doesn't look like it shows that. What can I do to make it known (and make it calculated when they go to "pay now") to make sure I don't get screwed?

When YOU check the listing, it will show where YOU live shipping to where YOU live.

Go to the UPS website, input size, weight and furthest zip code. Then, put that amount as 'flat rate shipping' (you'll have to 'edit' your listing) in your listing. You can always 'refund' someone if it was less and they are closer.

The shipping calculator automatically shows the cost to ship from the seller's ZIP Code to the ZIP Code of any member who looks at your listing. When you look at your own listing, you see the cost to ship to your own ZIP Code.  To see the cost to ship to different ZIP Code, just click on the "Shipping, returns, and payments" tab, scroll down, and enter a different ZIP Code.

Possibly a good idea if not using calculated on smaller/less weighty items, but on that item it may be quite the deterrent.

If a potential buyer were to see $300 shipping (because "flat" zone 8 shipping rate was chosen) they may just never click to view the listing when they are only a state or 2 away.

@grimmtrixx

I'm in Tennessee and it looks like a bargain shipped to me at $63.10. Boy, I'd hate to ship that typewriter... Good luck.

When you click on the S&H tab on the listing you can change the destination zip code. Put in something West Coast and you'll see the rate change. To zip 90210 shipping is displayed as $109.40

Then change the zip code back to your own so it doesn't screw up shipping rates you see when you're shopping.

Don't forget UPS surcharges aren't included. And doing flat rate is a bad idea. Buyers closer to you see the flat rate and move on to another listing.

Why does my item show lowest calculated shipping amount?

Right but that can't be right! I just shipped a 14 lb item and it cost $75 to ship it out to California. Why is this calculator not calculating properly?? No way it'll only be $100 for a 40lb item to, for example, Tennessee.

Anyone know how I can make it show the true cost? Even then I dunno how much it'll cost and I dunno how to make it calculate based on the winners location. How can I make it show a correct shipping when someone buys it? Ita crazy that this is so difficult

I just want it to show what the winner will pay based on their location. What option can I select so that when someone wins, and they go to pay, that the shipping gets calculated properly based on their location and they pay it? I ate $16 on a 14lb item cuz it cost $75 to send to California. This thing is almost 4 times that weight. I just need it to calculate right.

If we can figure out what happened with that transaction we might be able to solve this. For that shipment to CA can you provide the following:

1. Package dimensions and weight in listing

2. If there was any discrepancy between info in the listing and actual dimensions and weight, what was it?

3. Ship-from zip code and Ship-to zip code

5. Exact service used - was it UPS Ground?

6. eBay item number?

7. What was the estimated shipping cost when you purchased the label and what was the exact shipping charge when UPS billed you for the label?

Right.. but if it cost $300 I sure ad he'll aren't eating it 8n an item that may not even hit $200 lol so I dunno what to do. I just want the shipping to be accurate for whoever looks at it. If they live in CA, I want them to see exactly what it will cost to ship it to them because I am not eating money. I'm already gonna get fees from ebay that will kill me. But if someone on the east coast gets it. I want them to see what it'll cost to goto them too.

Long story short, whatever it will actually cost me to ship to someone, I want ebay to make sure that's what they charge them. I don't know how to set that up properly cuz someone said they checked it out and it said just $63 to them on the west coast which is wrong cuz the $14 item I sent cost me $36 but ebay only made the buyer pay $20. So I ate $16 on an item that ebay already stole $40 in fees from. It was never this difficult before.

See, what the heck! I just changed it to usps because the base price showed $64. But I know it will cost far more for a 40 lb typewriter to be shipped from where I am in RI to someone in CA. I know it may deter buyers, but I don't want to eat money on something that might not even go higher than $200 total. I just sold a 14lb item for $270 and ebay let the buyer just pay $20... they lived in CA. Even printing my shipping label thru ebay cost me $36 so I ate $16 in shipping AND $40 in ebay fees. I was not happy.

Ok so here's what I got from my past auction:

1.) The weight was 14lbs. Sadly I don't recall the dimensions and I don't see them in the listing as I cannot go in and edit its contents so I can't see what I put. But I measured it myself and put them in with the weight.

2.) No discrepancy woth weight or dimensions I checked them first and made sure they were entered. It gave me numerous options. I chose UPS Ground calculated shipping that showed a range of $20 to I believe $103. So I ASSUMED this meant of someone in say CA ordered it, that would've showed. They did buy it and it only charged them a flat $20. I did NOT select a flat shipping option as I had no idea its cost cuz this was my first auction in years and shipping was NEVER this expensive back then.

3.) It went from me at 02864 to 93035

4.) You had no number 4 lol

5.) It went UPS Ground and was a calculated shipping option which I presumed was based on the winners location.

6.) Ebay Item number is 204237438265

7.) So I am new to this all over again, it's been years. So I took it to UPS ground not bothering to do a label thru ebay and they wanted $75. So I went to USPS, they wanted $96. Lol So I went back to the listing and noticed if I get a shipping label thru them there is a discount. So it cost me $36 and change. But the buyer was only charged $20 so I ate $16.

Sidenote: After taxes and shipping Ebay showed the customer paid $314.98 total... but I only received the $270+$20 for shipping. Then Ebay took their 12.9% fee from the TOTAL the person paid which was $314.98. So they took a whopping $40 out from my payout. So from an item I sold for $290 with shipping, I lost $40 from fees and $16 from shipping. I am beyond **bleep** and Ebay said there was nothing they could do. So I showed them my current listing and I said to them that if I sell this item, that whatever the buyer pays in shipping should be the exact cost I pay when I go to ship it. They say yes. But I did everything the same last time and still ate $16. Sorry I'm ranting I am just so **bleep**

Ok I like this a lot I may have to look into this to be safe cuz its not fair to the buyer if I have to cancel the item they just won if Ebay let's them pay a wrong shipping amount. But I may have to if it comes to that
