Why does ebay suggest USPS First Class for packages over 1 pound?

When I am listing items weighing over 1 pound, eBay recommends that I offer USPS First Class shipping, and even quotes a price.  But I thought First Class packages are limited to 15.99 ounces, and anything over that must be shipped Priority Mail or Parcel Post?

That is bizarre...you are correct.

Out of curiosity, what is the shipping cost that it is quoting you?

You are correct--First Class is under 16 ounces.

The system definitely is not perfect.

By the way, I found out the hard way that with Parcel Select, you cannot print the label online from eBay. You have to take it to the Post Office. Even though eBay offers it, it's not doable online. Priority Mail is only a few pennies more, than Parcel Select, so it's more convenient if you have shipping pick-ups.

Plus with Parcel Select you have to provide your own boxes at extra cost or go dumpster diving at get it for free.

You cannot purchase Parcel Select Ground at the PO; it's an online service. The retail equivalent at the PO is called Retail Ground. Both services used to be called Parcel Post.  Postage cost at the PO will be higher than the online cost for Priority Mail.

eBay has decided to phase out access to Parcel Select Ground labels, even though USPS has made no changes in their services or policies, and it's offered by all other online postage sellers including PayPal, endicia, stamps.com, etc.  You can purchase Parcel Select Ground postage through PayPal at

www.PayPal.com/shipnow

But do compare prices before you do that. For Zones 1 - 4, the USPS online price for Priority Mail is  less than a dollar more than Parcel Select Ground. If you're a TRS you get a 3% discount when purchasing Priority labels through eBay, which often makes it cheaper than Parcel Select

IMHO Parcel Select ground should only be offered when necessary such as for hazmat or Oversize packages (i.e., length-plus-girth above the Priority limit of 108 inches).

I too am curious about this potential glitch, and would like to know what sort of price you're seeing.

You can print parcel select on ebay in the app. This way you can still use your pending payouts. If you cant print from phone then email it to yourself. After paying option is there to print or email. Very convenient.

I don't work from the app-- I use my office desktops or laptops, and Parcel Post wouldn't work from any of them. Don't know about the app.

In any event, for many, if not most packages, if within size/weight range, Priority is a better deal, and for many cases it has pre-made packaging.  I keep a stock of the various cartons and envelopes. Very handy.

Ebay's default shipping recommendation are often dumb like the "trending price" they show.

After you enter the weight and dimensions, click

Just out of curiosity, rather than emailing it to myself from the app, can I 'print' the label on the app then jump on a desktop and 'reprint'?

Opps...fumble fingered before finishing the last post.

After you enter the weight and dimensions, click on the link that says "select another shipping service" or something like that, I forget the exact wording.  It will display all the options.  Choose the one that fits if the default ain't it.  It will show options that cannot possibly work for that package, like an envelope or a fixed rate USPS box for something that won't fit.  Don't pick that.  Your best bet will probably be USPS Select Parcel Ground.

I don't think a the flat rate envelope option I'm looking at right for a 20" x 10" x 10" package I just entered is gonna work even if ebay lets me pick it.

You do need a basic understanding of which shipping methods are appropriate for which packages.

As I went on an on in another thread, I cannot guarantee you that if you pick an appropriate that's what ebay will let you use to print a label, but I digress.

Re: Why does ebay suggest USPS First Class for packages over 1 pound?

Is eBay offering FC on exactly one pound items, or also on 1 pound + 1 ounce items?  There was another thread that discussed why eBay/USPS allow for eBay labels to be printed for 16-oz items, but not anything over.

Re: Why does ebay suggest USPS First Class for packages over 1 pound?

It's not eBay's rule per se it is USPS rules for Commercial rates of FCP service.

You can try 1# 1-oz, but if the APV system catches it item would be bumped up to Priority Rates.

My thoughts also... Perhaps an offshore buyer of an item that's less than 4.0 lbs. shipping weight?
