I'm newbie seller on ebay so i never experinced this before. I sold an item on Saturday and shipped it same day, i scanned it myself on the kiosk and dropped into USPS box. Today when i checked the tracking on Ebay it says: USPS IN POSSESSION OF ITEM, but when i check USPS site it still says: USPS expects item for mailing (SSK). What does this mean? I'm confused, because now i dont know what is the status on it. Why would ebay show that item is in possesion if, as it seems, USPS still havent scanned it. Thank you.

You answered your own question. You scanned it yourself before you dropped it onto the box. Hence USPS won't scan it themselves but expects that they have the item. The tracking on this item should show subsequent "in transit" marks from that point on.

eBay counts the SSK (self service kiosk) scan as an acceptance scan for seller metrics.
USPS does not count the SSK scan as official possession of the package so if that was the only scan you could not file a lost package claim. Think about it - anybody could scan a package then take it home and file an insurance claim if SSK scans were considered in this way.
Chances are your package will get another scan soon, or at minimum when it arrives in the buyer's state. There's nothing to worry about at this stage @sandabug.

Thank you. I got another scan in the meantime, so its all good now. I was worried there for a sec that my package got missplaced because its been on SSK status for 2 days. Usually it changes same day.

Didn't think to note that, but you put the package in on Saturday. USPS won't handle packages on Sunday shifts, so you would have to wait until Sunday night/Monday morning to see any subsequent movement on the tracking.

USPS expects item for mailing (SSK) can work like a scam. I just had it happen to me. The buyer said the item did not work. I sent a label through Ebay and four days ago tracking said, "USPS expects item for mailing (SSK)". So it could be that the person printed a label at the self service kiosk (SSK) and then did not mail the package. This is an obvious loophole in the return process - apparently everyone assumes that if you printed a label at the SSK you would mail the package, but if you don't ever mail it, Ebay counts it as mailed. This is a mistaken assumption which may have just cost me $400.
