hi all
been reading that shipcover insurance doesn't include reinbusment of shipping cost if an item is loss.
So I'm assuming including shippi g with the price ...ie free shipping, would be a way to get the full cost back (item cost plus shipping). Any thoughts?
thanks steve

Where did you read that? I would be very surprised if Shipcover didn't cover shipping cost. Insurance is based on the declared value with the insurer, which by default includes the shipping cost (at least with every 3rd party insurer I've used).
If you offer free shipping you won't be able to withhold original shipping on buyers remorse returns, so there is that to consider as well, which is probably a far more likely scenario than the filing of an insurance claim (which I believe would cover shipping anyways).

I don't know if its changed but at one time, shipcover did not cover the shipping cost, they covered the insured value of the item.

Yeah, I found threads from a few years ago that said the same thing, but I would be very surprised if that hasn't changed. But I've never used Shipcover so I don't know for sure.

thats a good point, but I just sold a item for $600 item and need to send it to Italy where the shipping and insurance is going to be $41. So if it gets loss here I'm out $41 because it wasn't incuded in the item price. I doubt if they would return the item but you never know..Its a rare book in good condition. I never used shipcover ins and probably read the same post that green-night read so don't know their current policy but usually services take things off the table not add them, so still not sure.
thx steve

forgot to mention, when I print up the lable , the declared value is the cost of the item only , it doesn't include the shipping

Declared value with your insurer is different than the declared value on the package (like in the example below the declared value on a customs for would be $29.99 but declared for $43.19 with Shipsaver). Just a suggestion but you might want to look into another 3rd party insurer if Shipcover doesn't cover postage. I use Shipsaver and they always include the postage. U-Pic is another 3rd party insurer who also does.

Quite a few of us rather pack extremely good and self insure instead of giving extra money away to a third party.
Every item i sell i put a dollar to the side which is cheaper than buying it from someone else. then after a while you build up a surplus of money. When you don't use it then you have that much more that you can dip into from time to time.
My first dip was when i learned about an auction down the street within minutes of it starting that was poorly advertised, just grab that cash and good thing i did because i came home with 2 truckloads full. My biggest grab brought me a truck. if i didn't self insure but brought shipping insurance every time i would not have that truck but some third party would be making good mony on me.
Biggest key is when you self insure is ALWAYS put something aside from each sale. some say a quarter or two but i like putting a full dollar away because it adds up faster and bills are easier to store than a bunch of change and it is still cheaper . Big mistake people make is they stop or never put anything away and if something does happen then they don't have the cash to repay back. Another key factor is don't dip to soon or to often. you need to be able to cover every package that you have in the mail in case of some rare big disaster.
Some people say they cannot afford to self insure but in reality most people would be farther ahead cash wise if they did. yes, at first, it might be a little hairy to cover yourself but it doesn't take long to be on the positive side especially if you are a good packer. Even if you are a good packer and buy insurance from someone else, doesn't mean you are gauranteed to collect shipping insurance but guess what? i never been denied a claim when i self insured. 🙂
