Today I found out that my local USPS office is about a week behind on origin scanning my packages (Cleveland). I used to go to the clerk at the office and have them scanned, but I was asked to use the drop off bin due to the long lines. That was a mistake. See picture. This package was dropped off on December 9th, but it wasn't even scanned at my local facility until December 16th.
I'm sure many of you are in the same boat. Protect yourself. Get those packages scanned at the counter. I'm already getting questions about why I haven't sent out packages yet. Ebay needs to know that this is a real issue.

Same boat had packages picked up last Friday Saturday that hasn’t even been scanned yet and buyers are growing frustrated claiming I haven’t shipped yet. A lot of buyers are patient but there is always a few that don’t understand reasoning.

Personally, I don’t leave the post office until I see them do an acceptance scan on my packages. I’m getting very jaded about them.

The USPS is really slowing down. Parcels are moving very slowly now and it'a getting worse.

In fact, the package did leave your local PO at some point prior to December 16, but the local PO never scanned it (at all), so it's hard to say when it actually left.
The key detail is this: an "Origin Acceptance" scan occurs at the origin sort facility when a scanner reads a package that has never had an in-network scan before. The location placed in the record for that specific scan is not that of the sort facility, but of the location where the package originated. (I'm guessing here that it uses the Ship From ZIP value for that tracking number to decide what location to show, since of course the originating PO did not actually scan it, so there is no record of exactly who handled it.)
Other scans before and after that will show their actual location. Only the Origin Acceptance scan shows the location where it is thought to have originated, rather then the location where it is now.
If you feel up to the challenge, you might want to go have a hearty conversation with your local postmaster about getting the employees to scan packages the way they're supposed to. A proper Acceptance scan will avoid this sort of problem with misleading tracking histories.

The origin scan is the location that I dropped it off at. And I had a conversation with the manager today.

My post office refuses to scan them now, even when at the counter. They just grab them and toss them in the bin. When I asked for a receipt from last Wednesday's drop off he said "no" and then "NEXT" to the customer behind me. That package finally arrived in CA today.
Another package I dropped off last Friday did not get a scan until it showed up in WA today. That buyer already messaged on Monday asking why I hadn't shipped his package. I apologized for the post office and asked for patience. I hope that the scan closer to his home will appease him.

I do the same thing but it doesn't matter if the customer does not receive the package. Tracking only matters for eBay compliance issues.
Still have to do refunds and eat the cost of shipping and loss of the item.

Now you've learned the importance of standing in line UNTIL you get the initial scan. It's the only way and I do it year round, not just because of what's currently happening. Stopped leaving them in my own mailbox, I drive to the local PO to get that scan. No scan means open to INR case. Best of luck to you....

Same issue with my two packages but I was not as lucky as you were. The item was dropped on 3rd of December and its been two weeks and not yet scanned. I opened a case and I was told that my package is moving and the update is happening manually not electronically, and that is why there is no update on the website. But, I agree with what you said, get it scanned or be ready for a panic.

My post office does not scan packages when I wait in line to drop them off. They are throw in a bin. I have 5 orders that have not moved in 7 days. Very frustrating.

Same! I started going to Rocky River this week. Hoping for better results.

Westlake and Olmsted Falls are very accommodating with scans. The lines are long, but at least you get proof that the item was mailed. I do have packages missing from both locations - thank goodness I waited. Unfortunately I will still have to refund since there have been no scans since December 2.

What did he or she tell you about their lack of scanning the packages? That "Origin Acceptance" scan is the catch-up record that occurs at the origin sort facility (wherever that is). The usual syntax of a Front Counter Acceptance scan, what you get when you hand it over and they scan it at the front desk, is "USPS in possession of item."
The scans following "Origin Acceptance" will be marked with their actual location, where the package was when it finally got its Acceptance scan.
