The seller sent the wrong item and I requested a return. Sent the item out, but USPS doesn't know.

Hello,

I ordered an item from a seller a week ago and they sent me the wrong item. To make matters more confusing, they sent me the item another buyer bought and they sent that buyer the item I bought. It's a bit of a mess. Rather than wait until the buyer sends my item back (if they even do. My item is worth much more than their item), I decided to request a return. The seller accepted my return request and I printed out the label and shipped it. I woke up early yesterday morning to put the return package in my mail box for USPS to pick up. USPS came while I was at work and I checked the tracking and noticed that all it says is that the shipping label was made. It does not say in the tracking that USPS accepted the package. This was yesterday morning that I sent it out. Could it be that it just takes a couple days for tracking to update? Or could it be that USPS forgot to scan my package? Should I contact USPS even though tracking says they didn't accept it? I'm just hoping it wasn't stolen. I want my refund and the buyer wants his item back. It's a $90 refund I'm trying to get back so I need to make sure this package is returned to the buyer.

Thanks,

Matt

Hopefully it didn’t get stolen. In the future just make sure you hand these packages to a person or drop off at any PO.

USPS is suffering massive Covid delays and thus have decided to skip many scanning instances. I’d wait a day or two for the scans. That happens quite often to my outgoing packages these days.

it may take up to 12 hours from the first time it's scanned to update.  It may have been scanned at pickup, or it may not get scanned until it's in the post office somewhere.

If nothing updates in a day or so I would consider running a trace on it.

Where I live, letter carriers rarely scan outgoing packages. When they unload them at the post office, they are not scanned either. I either go to the post office to get a receipt or wait for the carrier and have him scan it.

Try to contact your letter carrier and ask him/her whether they picked up your package ( you can leave a not on your mailbox). If it was picked up, you need not worry. Even these days, they rarely lose packages. It may take longer. You may even see only one scan, when it was delivered.

Running  a trace won't help you because there is no acceptance scan.

It has still not updated. I sent it out 2 days ago. How do I run a trace on it?

Don't stress as it's been taking a couple of days for some offices to update acceptance scans.  Some of the postal workers aren't scanning when they pick up. At times I don't even see a scan until hits the regional sorting station.
