I listed a 23 pound oversized box with free shipping via UPS, but I had failed to exclude PR on my listing. Of course that's where it sold to today. Ooops. What are my best options now? UPS ground is not a viable option as it costs about as much as the original item's selling price. Should I ship via USPS for $73 and just eat up the costs? Will I get dinged for using a different service than what was listed?

this is a real moral dilema...........if UPS ships to PR then by rights it should be shipped
I understand not wanting to ship there but you made a mistake in the listing
I think that you know its not the right choice becuse its not really true...the address is fine but far away
as far as UPS ground going to PR I really do not know that much about ground service
keep on selling

If it were me ( is it that sink?) and I had shipping listed as UPS ground free, I would cancel this order citing " problem with address". Then change your exclusion list to include PR. After all that is the free shipping route ( UPS ground) that you were offering right?

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, UPS is the route I was offering to pay for. Canceling the sale seems like the easiest solution... but if I choose to cancel the sale, I risk defects and negative feedback, right? Do you know how many cancellations a seller can have before it negatively impacts my account?

It is based on a percentage, as seen on your seller dashboard. I would worry more about negative feedback than a cancellation if it isn't something you do very often. Does FedEx ship to PR? I don't use UPS or FedEx or ship oversize items, so I'm just asking. Maybe you can come up with a solution before cancelling. I priority out of the question?

They both ship world wide...

I would definitely cancel the sale citing "problem with buyer's address" as the reason. I don't believe there is any eBay penalty (defect) given if you need to use that reason.

If both FedEx and UPS ship worldwide, what is the issue? If it is just the cost, then problem with buyer's address isn't the right choice. If it is your error and you want to cancel because you don't want to eat the extra cost, then take the defect by saying you can't ship it. Personally, I would eat the cost and ship it.

Thank you all for the reponses! I do not feel right with canceling the transaction, so I chose to communicate with the buyer and confirm that they are okay with me using USPS instead of UPS like my listing stated. My 100% feedback is worth more than a monetary loss to me. 🙂
It's true that UPS ships to PR, but it is not UPS ground rate like I stated in the listing and like we are used to using in the 48 states. The buyer is fine with USPS, and they will ship it there for a personal loss of $30+, so I chalk it up as a learning experience... *Don't ever offer free UPS ground to anywhere but the 48!*

Yes, they both ship worldwide... it's just that UPS ground has different rates for PR since it's technically not ground shipping. (Think 5x the normal cost/pound!) I chose to eat the cost and send it via USPS instead. The customer is fine with that option, and 100% feedback rating is worth more than a bit of money.

@bontragerbargains We have all been there! Good choice in communicating with the buyer and coming up with a solution. I know I had a buyer cancel on me one time and I was so angry. I'm not one to ever leave a negative, but others would have, and rightfully so.

Good on you.
You made the correct choice.
Cancelling with the wrong reason to weasel out of a "seller error" would be the incorrect choice, and could very well end in a less than positive manner.
Suggesting that one do so is also the incorrect choice, and could very well be considered a violation of the "rules of engagement" on the community boards.

No mathers if you pay the cost of the shipping , the things are all web based stores are banned Puerto Rico. The shipping method or price are irrelevant because all web based stores denied to ship to Puerto Rico even if i pay $300 for de shipping. All of them are discriminating against their own territories. Need to start an investigation, because this is discrimination and their laws say that discrimination is illegal.
