Shipping multiple boxes for one listing.

Hi, I have a 10 car Jim Beam train set to list. The complete set with track fits in 2 large boxes over 20 pounds each. How do I enter multiple boxes to be shipped on the listing? I will need a label for each box. 

I would appreciate a seasoned sellers input.  I'm a fairly new ebay seller started May 2024.

So, when I enter the weight and box size, do I combine both box weight and size together?

Then when it sells purchase one label then the other label?

I want to make sure I get the proper cost of shipping from the buyer.

I'm in California and most of my buyers are from the East Coast. lol

What you can do is just add all of the weight and dimensions together in  the listing for the shipping calculator, then when it sells ship it in 2 boxes, many times it will be cheaper to ship 2 20lb smaller dimension boxes than one 40lb larger dimension. 

I usually do not worry to much about it when listing something like that, get a weight and size rough estimate and then when it sells get the actual size, weight and number of boxes

Unfortunately the system does not allow an option for setting up calculated shipping on multi-box shipments. Buyers need to be shown ship cost upfront; you can't invoice for higher shipping after the fact. Some general workarounds we sellers use:

• Use calculated shipping, entering the weight/dimensions of the larger/heavier box. Add a flat handling fee to cover the cost of the second box. If you base that fee on the rate to the furthest zone you can refund any overage to a buyer in a closer zone if you want (or keep it and put it towards packing materials and fees).
• Set up rate tables. With rate tables you'd use a flat ship cost, but can enter different amounts based on zone. Basically, you'd calculate shipping on both boxes, add the rates together and you've got your flat rate - do that for each zone so close buyers aren't overcharged and far away buyers aren't undercharged. Then when you set up your listing, choose flat rate shipping and select the option to apply the rate table you set up. https://www.ebay.com/ship/rt/

Honestly, I'd go with option 1. Rate tables are too much work for a single listing, but the option is there if you want it.

It is almost never to your advantage to send 2 boxes instead of 1. Just put it all in one giant box and send it that way.  What you are doing lights shipping money on fire.

this is almost never the case in almost any circumstance, unless the single box size exceeds a carrier limit therefore incurring a extra fee.

for this particular listing I would just charge a flat rate cost. look up the price from you to new york and use that. If it goes down the road great, if it goes to Florida no biggie

If you have 2 packages that are 15" X 10" X 10" 20 lb each and ship them from Illinois 62448 to california 90210 they would be $16.58 each using ground advantage. Total of  $33.16

Tape the 2 together as one and end up with 15" X 10" X 20 40LB and it would be $100.48 ground advantage.

$67.32 saved by shipping in 2 boxes

that's because you are referencing usps, usps charges massive amounts of money for large packages
so in that case it would really depend on both of the packages being small enough to not hit the extra charge individually.
anything larger/heavier is normally cheaper to ship with fedex/ups

As stated by stainlessenginecovers this is the best option.   Hopefully, you set your listing at a flat rate rather than calculated shipping.
