Shipping Cost Complaints Should Be Directed to Ebay - Not to Sellers

I receive about 3 complaints a week from customers about shipping costs.  Sample complaint: "I know it only costs $5 to send it priority from NY to California!  Why don't you just stuff it in a flat rate box!"  I'm getting pretty tired of responding to these people.  I don't set the ship prices on my items - if the item weighs less than a pound, I send it 1st Class Mail, and if it weighs more than a pound, I send it priority.  I buy eBay's lightweight packaging and do my best to keep prices down.  Ebay's Ship Payment System is bizarre - they charge the customer one price, charge me another price (pretending it's a discount), and then bill me 10% (which eliminates the discount).  I'm guessing that this weird arrangement allows them to avoid paying taxes on their shipping profits.   Whatever.  In any case, I'm sick of them outsourcing shipping cost complaints to me, since I have zero control over my customer's shipping costs.  They should AT LEAST direct customers to send shipping inquiries to eBay, not to sellers.  eBay uses this passive strategy regularly - they don't want to deal with customer service complaints, so they use sellers as free labor.  I'm also tired of the way eBay pressures me to offer free shipping.  I sell used clothing, and my prices are low.  The only way to offer free shipping without literally giving the clothes away is to raise prices to cover the cost.  I tried it once, and my sales stalled completely.  I tried to switch back using the bulk listing tool and a tech bug made half my listings unpurchasable.  Ebay didn't alert me and I lost money for months.  When I figured out what was wrong, eBay refused to refund me store fees.   It was a total disaster.

The 10% is a final value fee not a shipping expense. it really has nothing to do with your shipping cost.

ebay doesn’t set shipping prices either. They are set by the Usps. It sounds to me like you have your shipping set to charge retail to your customers. You can change that to charge actual shipping if you want.

Ebay charges a percentage fee both on the item (the final value fee) and on the shipping.  If you are a seller, you should check your statement so that you are aware of both charges.  UPS does not set our ship fees (I don't btw ship UPS - I ship USPS, but same deal).  Ebay negotiates it's own blanket rate with shipping carriers and then charges us direct for shipping.  I guarantee you that they make an overall profit on shipping charges.

BTW: do not charge less than the retail ship charge or you will lose money every time you ship when ebay charges a fee on the money you received for shipping.  You need to check your statement, because it sounds like you are unaware of a lot of hidden ebay fees.

I will add: be careful of the supposed sales numbers that Ebay Provides to sellers.  eBay  doesn't subtract it's own fees or shipping charges from those numbers, so that sellers get a wildly inflated picture of their sales.  If you do the math on your own, and really review your seller statement, you will understand how much you are actually making for your time and money.  My seller statement tells me that I'm making about twice what I actually make.  In real life I do not make minimum wage on my eBay store.
