I know there are a lot of posts like this but none really similar to mine. The seller refunded me through PayPal. He then asked me through eBay messages, not resolution center, to return to a different address than what he sent the item from. Am I safe with just the eBay message as proof if the seller files a claim through eBay or PayPal saying i never returned it?

You've already received your refund so it's safe to ship the return back to any address. But if the seller wants the item back, he needs to send you the money before you return it. That can be done through PayPal.

Was there a prepaid return label issued?

Nope, I got a message from eBay saying the seller can't issue a return label (for whatever reason)
The message also said "The seller is still responsible for return shipping costs, so contact them to arrange return shipping"

Seller is probably having the item dropshipped and they don't want the item back and he is having the item shipped to him.
Since they have already given your refund, you can ship it where ever they want it shipped as long as they pay the shipping.

No need to prove anything to anyone. No claim to be opened. I mean, you could keep the item if you really wanted to, not that I'd recommend it.
