has anyone had to actually keep an item that a seller won't take back? I recently bought an item and have no recourse to even exchange it or get anything akin to store credit, Ebay won't even hear about it, that's just disingenuous, I'm seriously considering not purchasing anything else from here anymore.

Seller responded.................... with a "decline".
eBay is not absent. They have policies for the situation, and they were followed.
Problem there is that eBay no longer allows for a "restocking fee" in the eBay return process.

Unfortunately returning a $152 airbag purchased in error, and passing out a neg because the seller used FedEx home delivery (shown in the listing) is not the sort of "brisk business" that sellers are looking for.

"Well, congratulations on your excess of money, I, on the other hand don't have the money to be giving away to scoundrels and thieves, here or elsewhere."
It's not my excess of money; it's me being a responsible person, an informed buyer and being honorable to terms I agreed to.
Not accepting returns does not make someone a scoundrel or a thief. You refuse to take ownership for failing to read the return policy, which is present at the top of every listing. You are actually the person who is trying to force a return. You are in the wrong.
Being mad at the seller for sticking to the terms of sale, talking ill of eBay and being nasty to posters here speaks to your character. You didn't read the terms and you need to accept the consequences of your own behavior and quit lashing out.

That is the reason that the seller isn't required to accept the return if they have a NO RETURNS policy. Unless the wrong size was given in the listing, the mistake was yours. Perhaps you could resell it.

What type of item was this that 'did not fit'? Quite a variance in what that means depending on the item.

If the item is not working or is not as described, your covered and can return. If you just don't like it or no longer want it, then sellers are not required to take it back.
When I was selling at outdoor flea-markets, the joke between sellers was the returns dept is on the second floor.
All ebay listings show what a seller's return policy is before yo buy.
