Seller sent first class label for a priority mail box. How do I stay covered?

I will try and keep this really simple. I bought an item. Wasn't as described. Seller accepted return because he realized he was wrong. Sent me first class return label. I took it to the post office. They said box is 3x the weight it should be for first class and that I cannot use that label.... So here's where it gets tricky... 1. Seller said, okay, just ship it back and I will return your money plus the $15 it costs. My problem is that ebay uses that tracking number (on the faulty label) to ensure the package gets there to say "okay the buyer returned the package" and the "refund" can be issued... If I mail it on my own, and theres physically no way for Ebay to track it (and no place for me to input that tracking number), couldnt the seller just keep the item and never refund me since there is no traceability from ebays stand point? In my opinion, the only way I am safe is if he refunds me first then I send it. Customer service is down obviously otherwise this could be handled in 2 min over phone, haha

Your PO may be in error in their thinking.

If the label was sent through an eBay return request then the label is a "return service label".

I returned a 4+ lb package using a "return service" label with no issues.

If provided directly outside of a case, and does not say "return service", then disregard.

Maybe just find an office where you can just drop without dealing with an employee.

be sure to note the tracking #  for yourself

Return labels are different than regular labels. First class return will handle anything up to 70 lb

The label says FIRST-CLASS PKG RTN SVC And then lists his address. There is a tracking number there. It is a preferred return shipping label on ebay (upper right corner of label) Bottom left of the label has an ebay return ID number and an ORDER #

Possible to go to a different post office?   Your post office is in error.  This can be shipped this way.

RTN means return. If possible just slide it in the package slot in the lobby

Just affix the label, drop the 4 pounds in the parcel bin next to the APC kiosk, and slowly back away.

1. If it is delivered, you get a refund.

2. If it is returned to sender, you get a refund.

3. If it is held for postage due, you get a refund.

At eBay, whoever paid for the shipping (buyer or seller) is responsible for it. So if you buy the return shipping, you might end up out-of-pocket for the postage, and up the creek without a refund; don't do it.

I'm a mail carrier. Though the label states First Class, the charge is set when it goes through the returns dept. The label should be accepted no matter the package.
