I bought a ring for over $200, when i recieved it it was a smaller carat weight than described. I opened a case for return and the seller did not get back to me in 7 days so I asked ebay to step in. During the last day they had before the case was forfeited in my favor they responded by giving a full refund. Ebay closed the case.
I figured they didnt want the item back. Then a few days later they are messaging me with instructions to return the item on my dime. I said they need to send a prepaid label. They send me a prepaid fedex ground. I do not have a fedex store near me and Im not willing to travel to return this item. I asked them for a usps or ups label instead and they said they dont do that and sorry for the inconvenience.
So what do I do? They're making it difficult for me to return their item. Do I have to pay for a usps label myself? Do I keep the item? I've never been in this situation. What's the protocol here?

So, therefore, the buyer would be "unjustly rewarded?" I am so glad I no longer sell here anymore - way too much drama for me.

What is a "proper shipping label" anyway?

One that I can use to get the seller's item back to them, instead of one they know I dont have reasonable access to. But they must not be all that fussed about the return, i dont know.

Well you can use the label. Its a valid label. There are just circumstances that make it harder to use the label. It is really odd that the seller is being so uncooperative in this situation though. Wonder if he's a chinese dropshipper? Maybe he's in china and ships from the US......

Not for nothing, but I am not even sure that a Seller has to send the buyer a return label of the buyer's choice? I'm sure @missjen831 would know.
Really, all you need to do is to call for package pick up. There should be no fee as it is not your account and the shipper will be billed. And exactly how would the Seller know that you do not have reasonable access to? Try calling FedEx Customer Service # 1 (800) 463-3339 tell them you have a package for pick up and do not go into details that are not pertinent to the return - you just need to return it and you will be done. If you don't, especially after the refund that you received, it may not work out in the end for you.
If it were me as your Seller, your refund would have been received prior to me receiving the item back in the same condition as it was sent. Your seller was nice IMHO.

I've been in the same boat; a seller sent me a return label that was illegible (it was a postage stamp sized scan of a PDF that blurred to nonexistence when I tried to enlarge it enough to put on the package). Doesn't the seller have to send a return label that a buyer can actually use (around here it's 'Duct Taped to a Whale Delivery Systems')?
That is different. An illegible label is not usable and not valid. In OPs situation the label IS useable (but inconvenient)

This was a forced refund. No nice seller here

Do? You do nothing.
A seller that can't figure out the ebay returns process or how to send a $2 label to get a $200 ring back is a seller not long for ebay.

Forced refund or not, the OP was sent a label to return the item, but can't/won't because the seller "they know I don't have reasonable access to"
I would like to see anyone go to any B&M or better yet get an online refund and not return the item. I am not saying that the seller is right or wrong, buyer received a refund and the means to return the item but can't/won't because there is no "reasonable access to." Call to have it picked up - simple solution. I am still wondering how the seller knows the buyer does not have "reasonable access to." The seller must be Ms. Cleo that sees all and knows all.

There are no ebay or paypal repurcussions about anything you do with this ring.
Give it to a bum, throw it in the street, drive it to the sellers front door, take it to a pawn shop, swallow it...whatever you want to do with it, do with it.
The one and only thing I would do, and this if I was feeling rather magnanimous, is to offer, a last time, for them to send a PDF 1st Class/Priority label, if they want it back.
If not BBL & ignore forever.

If the seller has responded to the claim with Return for Refund and sent a FedEx label from the get go, this would be a non-issue. Buyer would've had to send it back FedEx or lose the return claim.
The seller neglected to respond to the claim timely, therefore eBay forced the refund (and the seller got an Unresolved defect)
Now their tune has changed and they want the item back. Maybe they should be accommodating. You catch more flies with honey.

The point is that I dont have to return the item at all because the seller dropped the ball by not responding so eBay issued the refund and closed the case.
So the seller messaged wanting the item back. I'm working with them because I'm the nice one, they aren't doing me any favors. And considering they have no leg to stand on youd think they'd send a label that will work for me (anything other than fedex) to get their item back. If I were in their shoes I'd be doing anything possible to keep the buyer happy and get my item back because they arent required to return it.
But instead they're telling me that they're sorry for the inconvenience but fedex ground is all they'll provide. So I guess I'm sorry for their inconvenience too because I will not go out of my way or spend my own money to get them back their not as described item.
I will send them one more message and they can either produce a usps label or I'll assume its not important to them and wash my hands of the matter.

Send it back USPS 1st class with tracking for 3 bucks or less. You got your $200.00 back and I highly doubt 3 bucks is going to break you. You have wasted more time on this than necessary. Your time spent sure would have been worth more than 3 bucks out of your pocket. If you refuse to spend 3 bucks to send it with tracking just toss it in an envelope and send it for 50 cents.

As already mentioned, why don't you just drop it in the drop box? If the seller gets it, good. If he doesn't, too bad.
