through PayPal. Is this true? I don't want to cancel my request and then not be able to get a refund if she decides to not do it...

no do not close or cancel return seller can refund you.
WAIT FOR THE REFUND EBAY WILL CLOSE AUTOMATICALLY ONCE YOU RECIEVE YOUR MONEY BACK FROM SELLER

Do yourself a favor do not respond to the seller's messages. She is clearly trying to interfere with your return. Once you close a return request you cannot re-open it. She is aware of this and is blatantly lying to you. She needs to send you a return label. When you receive it use it to return the item.
If she does not send the return label or refund after the return, call ebay and complain. They will take care of it.

Your seller is a LIAR
If you close or cancel the return, you are done.

Some have argued that some eBay staff will lie, some sellers & buyers will also lie .
In whom can you place your trust ?
Your answer is, place your trust only In God

Absolutely do not close your return request. The seller is lying and it's a scam used by unscrupulous sellers. I've received that same statement by sellers who know that I can't reopen the claim on eBay if it's closed. Then the only choice you have is to open the claim on PayPal, but then you are required to pay the return shipping. Whenever a buyer opens a claim PayPal puts a hold on those funds in the seller's account and they will be released to refund the buyer.

I think it depends.
There are legitimate reasons to want to deal with buyers directly in lieu of the automatic claims system. For example, a partial refund. I don't think there is an option for partial refund when sellers face a claim.
I'm not nearly as quick to assume fraud, as all of the previous posters seem to be.

Good to know. I don't know if partial refund is an option for all return reasons/scenarios.
I used this example off the top of my head because I've been in situations where buyers have chosen the wrong return type/reason and what would solve the problem was not an option. I have asked buyers to close a return request so we could deal directly. They have always done so and we resolved the issue.
I sell insects, and death in transit is a common problem. In that case I can either ship more or do a partial refund. I have been in situations where within the dispute system, the easy solution was not an option.
While I guess there is a potential for fraud, I wanted to let the OP know that it isn't always so.

🤣 ...no it's not true, the seller is either trying to delay for some reason (likely spent your money) or is just an idiot

As the others have said, do not close the return and do not respond to the lying seller's messages anymore. The seller has shown their true colors and is not to be trusted. Communication is useless at this point.
The seller has 3 Business days to either
1) accept your return and issue a return label. (Who pays for that label depends on the return reason).
Or
2) Refund you through the returns process.
If the seller does not accept the return and issue a label (or a refund) , you can ask eBay to step in on the 4th business day.

WRONG!!!!! You NEVER close a claim until you have a cleared refund or replacement item IN HAND.
It is possible to refund (total or partial) with a claim open.

Andrew: You seem to have posted with good intentions; however, a seller telling a buyer that he has to close his claim to be refunded is quite often an attempt to avoid refunding. Don't know the percentages, but would estimate at least 80% of the time. No one is assuming fraud, we are just pointing out the reality of the situation.
And, regardless of the reason that the seller told the buyer this, it is never a good idea to follow those directions.
