I opened an INAD request recently because the seller used an incorrect photo. He argued with me about it for a couple days, but relented because he knew eBay would side with me. I sent back the package and he received it 2 days ago on Saturday.
He just sent me a message today, Monday, saying eBay won't let him refund through the request so he wants me to give him my PayPal so he can send money directly, and then I can close the request. Right off the bat, I don't trust this guy at all as he's already tried to scam me once. Also, he should already have my PayPal since the exchange is in the history. I even looked at my history and found where it says I sent the money to him.
I know he doesn't want to get in trouble with eBay for what might be an error with their site, but I really don't trust him. He's the one that broke eBay's listing policy, he's the one that tried to argue with me but then admitted to using an inaccurate photo on purpose, and now he's unable to send me my money for some reason that he hasn't clarified.
I do not want to get scammed again but I also really want to believe him. I looked into it and this is definitely something that happens to sellers sometimes, I just don't know if he's telling the truth. All I know is there are two options here, either I let him send the money directly without it being connected to the exchange at all, which I am very uncomfortable with, or I wait until I can ask eBay to step in and they will send me the money and put a strike on his account.
Has anyone had to deal with this before? Is this a scam that sellers try to do? I just want my money back.

It's been a little over a week since I made this post and I wanted to update just in case anyone stumbles across this discussion. I listened to 1tuna's reply and didn't respond to the guy. While I was asleep that night, I got a notification that the seller asked eBay to step in and another one that said eBay sided in my favor and I was refunded. I'm not sure what went on with the seller but I got my money back so that's all I really care about. Do not close a request without getting your money back and if you ever have any questions about a listing, contact the seller first!

thats not how its done.I have processed many returns. The seller knows the item has been returned, ebay also probably knows and will remind him that the item has been returned and its now refund time.
I would stop any contact with them,if you do not see the money in 48 hours I wound contact ebay and ask them to step in,they will take care of it for you .If you sent it back with a return label and the return has the tracking number you are good to go.
do not let the seller talk you into closing the return, you will not be refunded if that happens

You don't have to do anything to get your refund. eBay policy says:
If the seller doesn't issue a refund within 2 business days of the item's delivery to the seller, we will automatically issue the buyer a full refund on the seller's behalf. The seller will be required to reimburse us for such refunds. Learn more about reimbursement

IMO I don't think it's a scam The seller is likely in Managed Payments and not understanding the process. There is a tiny selection at the top of the page where the reason for the refund must be determined from a drop down box or it does not go through. It's very easy to miss.
