I recently ordered an item from a seller in Japan. I paid for an economy shipping rate, with the understanding that it might take a long time to arrive: I paid on 7/17, and the ETA was 8/11-9/2. However, then I got a tracking update indicating it would arrive early: the new ETA was 7/27. I looked at the tracking and saw it showed the item had arrived at the International Service Center in Chicago on 7/22. As of today (7/30) it still hasn't arrived.
Now, I understand that things often get stuck at the ISC Chicago. What puzzles me is that this tracking information is ONLY available through Ebay: Japan Post doesn't recognize the tracking number, and neither does USPS. Ebay's tracking information reports ORIGIN POST IS PREPARING SHIPMENT on 7/21, and then it's in Chicago on 7/22. There's no reference to specific place of origin in Japan. The tracking number begins in UN and ends in JP, with 9 digits between.
The seller's feedback is consistently positive; however, I'm concerned because I can't verify the tracking information and wonder if some kind of forgery would be possible (though forgery doesn't seem consistent with an earlier estimated arrival date). I haven't tried contacting the seller yet; I mainly wanted to get some perspective about the tracking here.
