Postman wants packages put in mailbox?

Anyone have issues with their Post office delivery person not wanting to pick up First Class packages from your front porch? I checked my camera today, and my postman comes to my door, puts his hands on his hips, picks up the package, then proceeds to look at my camera, and from what I could understand says into the camera "put this in the mailbox, because..you know. "  I am totally confused by this. He has picked up countless times before, I am letting it go, because I may have misunderstood what he said. I am curious though, am I supposed to put items in the mailbox if they fit? I mean they do offer the pickup service. I am in a rural area, but I just don't trust putting items in the mailbox.  Thoughts?

I didnt know we could tip our carriers. I though they couldn't take cash tips. If that is the case I would gladly tip him. I usually just give him a gift card for Christmas

Re: Postman wants packages put in mailbox?

You might have an overworked mailman too.   My brother is in one in Florida and sometimes he does not get home until 8 - 9 pm. So maybe that carrier is overworked and putting the items in the mailbox will make easier.

Re: Postman wants packages put in mailbox?

Time was..................   rural carriers were not expected to/required to exit their vehicles to pick up/leave mail unless necessary, as in "would not fit".

Not sure why/if a "Carrier Pickup" would/should override that policy when an item will fit in the mailbox.

Show us the video and maybe we can decode what he is saying in there.

Re: Postman wants packages put in mailbox?

Since the official message about pickups from the USPS states that the package can be in/at the mailbox or on the porch, among other locations, why would a local facility be allowed to have its own rules/preferences?

And maybe that particular carrier is just concerned because there have been porch pirates in that neighborhood.  Discussing it with him seems like the best course.

@got_to_roll

That's where I put all my packages.  However, if they show up for delivery that day who knows? My mail service is very poor where I live and inconsistent.  Mondays and Saturdays are a coin toss and yes I have reported these issues.  But I've never had an issue with anyone stealing them out of the mailbox.  I would just assume that's the area to leave them in as in the winter months my porch can be rather icy if I forget to buy salt and I wouldn't want the carrier to be injured.  That's just me.

Happy Selling.

I give my carrier some of my homemade salsa in the summer.  Sadly she doesn't work every day, but loves the salsa.
