Ohio Congressman Robert Latta sent an official request to Post Master General DeJoy to begin an investigation into the ongoing issues with the postal sorting facility located in Allen Park, MI. (Detroit area). You can read the official missive at Congressman Latta's web page.
Television news reports cited unconscionable delays in sorting and processing, the high volume of lost and late delivered mail and loss to Ohio businesses due USPS inadequacy.
Newscasts noted USPS closed the Toledo sorting hub several years ago claiming it would improve delivery time if northwest Ohio mail was trucked to Michigan before being returned to Ohio for delivery. (This brilliant move added 3 - 5 days delivery time for a first class letter being mailed from one Toledo address to another Toledo address and lost 350+ local jobs).
USPS still owns the Toledo sorting hub and in the Spring of this year local elected officials toured the building and existing equipment. A request was made at that time to DeJoy to reopen the facility to handle the huge mail backlog due to Covid and improve delivery times. Residents were citing medications not being delivered for weeks, bills arriving late and payments sent arriving late, as well as necessities purchased online experiencing long delivery delays.
Congressman Latta stated that Ohio mail should remain in Ohio for sorting and processing citing reopening of the shuttered Toledo facility and currently operating facilities in Cleveland and Cincinnati. (Might have been Cleveland and Columbus).
While Mr DeJoy is crowing about how USPS is handling millions of packages this holiday season plus now accepting the overflow that UPS and FedEx can't deliver, don't expect to read or hear reports anytime soon of the millions of late deliveries and financial losses inflicted upon businesses due to forced refunds by online marketplaces.
I applaud the overworked and understaffed USPS employees who go above and beyond to do what they can to move packages. These people deserve our thanks and appreciation. May they all have a safe and peaceful holiday season.
