Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

Since January I have had multiple issues with USPS not delivering mail.  Just stuck in the system not doing anything for weeks. WEEKS, not days. It is beyond annoying at this point. Seriously, 6 pieces of mail not getting delivered.

2 have been resolved, showing up over 3.5 weeks late. 4 are currently on the missing mail search and it has been over 3 days on many inquiries where I haven't heard back from USPS. Thankfully, most buyers have been really cool about it knowing it was out of my hands.

Let me preface, none of these have stagnated in the USPS system in the same location. They are not going to one regional facility and getting stuck. They are scattered and have no rhyme or reason.  One has never been scanned again after pick up, I am hoping to hear back on that one soon. The others were stuck in different locations all over the US.

I have been lucky so far, and two have been resolved and I didn't lose anything. However,  my luck with that is sure to run out.

What are sellers protections in these situations?  Of course I will refund the money to the buyer, but do I just eat it and file missing mail and wait the ridiculous time for USPS to refund me?

I have been a seller for a while but this repeated issue with USPS is mind boggling and incredibly frustrating. I am wondering is anyone else having this issue or am I just really unlucky.

EBAY does not have any Seller protection for lost mail.   You should go to USPS.com and file claim for "lost package" (include copy of EBAY invoice to prove value of item).   I had good luck with USPS.com approving claim and mailing me a check for full amount (purchase price + postage).

Good luck to you.

Re: Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

It seems to be a growing trend. I have filed three lost package insurance claims with USPS in the last 6-7 months. That is more than I have filed in the last 10 years. I refunded all the buyers well before they opened an INR and while I have been reimbursed by USPS for all the claims it is becoming disconcerting to say the least. Following is the timeline for filing insurance claims with USPS. They are pretty quick, 2-3 weeks, about resolving the case and sending you a check.

Those are not the only two options.

Some USPS handling issues or delays can be traced back to issues with packaging and labeling.

Ink that runs, labels that come off, labels applied in places where they cannot be machine read, tape that comes unstuck, and tape over labels that prevents machines from reading them can all cause issues.

It might be worth reviewing the USPS parcel labeling guidelines to see if there is something you could change or improve:

Re: Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

You may want to closely inspect your labels after printing, I have found in my case at times the quality of the print is less than optimal and yes that can cause errors in the system... I am by no means saying this is the case, however I do like to make sure I've eliminated all possible error from my end.

Things such as printer wear and tear, running low on toner (for those with laserjets), quality of labels (especially if you started on a new batch of labels recently). Are the labels sticking to the packages good, I also like to rub my thumb over the printed area as a "smudge" test to see if the print wears off (it shouldn't).

As well of course I like to see if there's any relationship with the lost parcels being a certain type of packaging, sometimes small envelopes or small boxes like to cause problems too, falling between the cracks as they say... There may truly be no rhyme or reason but if a certain package is what is getting lost then perhaps using a different box / envelope to mail those specific orders can alleviate the issue.

Not sure what else, I know it's frustrating, not even just the money but the resulting defects; it is good you are paying attention to this, if all else fails raising your prices a bit should slow your sales down while you see about finding a solution.

Also I don't refund without an INR, no way. Doing that may give ebay the impression that I'm taking sales off site so I always have my buyers open an INR (instead of refunding I ask them to do that) and then I wait to the last day as a fair half the time the package shows up and I get to keep the money but I can most definitely appreciate you not giving your buyers a hard time.

Re: Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

Although the labels and tape issues are certainly one reason, I have been monitoring tracking for my packages for the last 6-months or so. USPS is currently struggling with numerous internal issues such as employee retention, automation glitches, and theft, not to mention extreme weather issues.  Expect this to be the new normal.

Re: Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

sounds like you schedule pick-up. I have never done that. Do you get any type of receipt? My guess is probably not.

I always print my labels and deliver to the post office to get a printed receipt incase an issue does come up.

Re: Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

Let me answer a few questions that have been asked.

1. My printer is new and ink levels are good. I have reprinted in the past if they were not up to par. I am vigilant in making sure things are good on my end as much as I can.  Always good to make sure though.

2. My sales as of late are with the same type of items. I can look into a new way to ship them, but they are cards and less than an ounce so they are in a standard envelope USPS deals with on the daily. I have had hundreds of these go through without issue prior to the last 2 months.  Even Christmas when I was selling more than now it was fine. And I haven't changed anything since August 2023 which back then was my printer.  Envelopes, paper, tape -- nothing is new that could be a possible red flag reason.

3. I do have it picked up from my home. They are scanned immediately and I have proof as they send email my items were picked up, and you can see on USPS tracking it was picked up. I have found it is better in my area to have my regular mail carrier do it than my local post office where it can sit for a day.  By no means is my local post office perfect, but the majority of my issue isn't on their end. The issue starts once it leaves my area and heads out. It typically makes it out of my post office and the local regional facility. After that is where it goes into the abyss. And I am in the heart of the US so it goes in all directions.

4. I have had refunds in the past and that was always done with the buyer filing a claim. I wouldn't just refund without INR as that doesn't make logical sense to me either.

I will continue to make sure I am handling things properly on my end, and possibly change up my packaging.

But I will add 2 of the 6 are from the same day they were picked up.  One made it out of regional facility and stagnated with the "in transit" message, the other is the one that hasn't moved since it was picked up.  Those are the ones I am hoping to get word on soon. I am thankful my buyers have been so nice.

Re: Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

There is a postal shipping center in Bloomington California.  It is called the Black Hole of packages.  Packages tend to get misplaced, lost or redirected.  I feel your pain.  I have had a package go from California, to Florida, to Missouri, Texas and back to California - to a destination 10 miles from my house.

Wherever you go, there you are. Please remember, when you are asked if you are a god, you say yes.

Re: Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

Among the factors which can be complicating your experience are

1. Viewing tracking on Ebay can be out of date. Ebay is sometimes going days without updating tracking, You must view the tracking on the USPS site,

2. USPS is missing scans at some sorting stations. I have been seeing an increase in shipments which are not scanned until they are close to their destination.

3. Number 10 envelopes when shipped via GA seem to get lost. And reappear.  And I will not get on my hobby horse about ESE.

My solution is to not babysit my shipments. It takes restraint but if there are no buyer complaints I assume all is well. And so far, all has been well.

"One has never been scanned again after pick up"...Best to take items to post office to get an accepted scan which is what I always do.

I have never had an item lost last year up to today so far with the USPS.

"Viewing tracking on Ebay can be out of date. Ebay is sometimes going days without updating tracking, You must view the tracking on the USPS site,"

Yes, I am well aware as I have been selling long enough. I do track via USPS.

"USPS is missing scans at some sorting stations. I have been seeing an increase in shipments which are not scanned until they are close to their destination."

When the mail has been missing for WEEKS not days it becomes an issue with me. They are not even close to destination.

"My solution is to not babysit my shipments. It takes restraint but if there are no buyer complaints I assume all is well. And so far, all has been well."

I am not babysitting. I have buyers putting in claims they haven't received their orders. That is when this process starts. They have been very patient knowing USPS has possession. The fact it is WEEKS on end is my issue.

Re: Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

It says USPS accepted! This is the only one that has had a problem at pick up.

I understand you are all for going to post office for accepted scan. I get the same accepted scan from my mail carrier however.

OH MY !  I was told by my Postmaster that Ground Advantage should not be used for Flats (i.e., #10 envelopes or any flat mail) as they will NOT (usually) get a scan.  GA isn't a substitute for tracking of First Class Mail.  Flats do not get caught / pulled out for tracking (usually) like packages.  If you've been getting scans on flats you've been lucky.

Talk to your Postmaster to better understand using GA on flat mail.

Re: Multiple USPS Mail Pieces Missing, Not Reaching Destinations

I know that there are a few areas that are having major staffing and equipment issues around the country. Parts of Georgia, Illinois, and Texas are affected. I just had something mailed on the 2nd of March that went to Illinois via the scenic route (Phoenix). Delivered today. It wasn't scanned until it arrived in Phoenix. Thankfully the customer was a sweetheart to deal with. I got a replacement out to her which is still in route.

You can file, "Where's my mail" with the USPS. Sometimes that gives it a nudge. I know it's frustrating. I HATE seeing the ebay report that says it was delivered late. That just tans my hide.  I have a 1.25% rate for late delivery. They were all mailed on time.
