I recently sold an item that is 9 oz . I can send it at a lower cost if I ship it first class package (I am assuming here). My listing was advertised shipping via priority Mail package... a few $$ more than first class.
I am not a huge business so every $$ counts. My question: is it okay to change shipping service if it would save money or do I have to stick to what was stated my in listing?

Yes, I know that is how it is configured/defined in the listings ... and that First Class Package gets the "standard shipping" label. But (like all things "eBay") we sellers get mixed messages. For example, on the new shipping option page, First Class Package is now listed as an option for "Expedited Shipping".
I'm more inclined to blame sloppy writing there, as they're talking about providing "expedited" services, but then proceed to list practically all of them except Media Mail, in decreasing order of promptness, with First Class stuck on the bottom.
The next section of that page is perhaps more applicable to this very discussion here:
Maintain your shipping service promise
Provide a great customer experience by using the class of shipping service you promised in your listing. If you use a slower shipping service than the one you offered, your items may be delivered later than your customer expects.

I agree with the other posts that gave an emphatic "No." If your listing says, "Priority" mail shipping, then you must ship the item Priority mail. The buyer paid for the faster shipping option, then why not honor it? Don't turn around and offer a slower shipping option. That's a cop out just to save a few bucks.
Two sellers I've bought from recently have Priority mail in their listing and shipped my items instead by FedEx Smart Post/First Class mail.

@ten_to_twelve No it really isn't okay ... but IF you do then you need to issue a partial refund the Buyer for the overage they paid AND send them a message letting them know why you are doing the partial refund. There are however times you may WANT to ship Priority Mail on a light weight item if it has a decent value because you get either $ 50 or $ 100 Free Insurance with Priority Mail opposed to NO insurance with First Class.

NO. though it is always tempting to make an x-tra dollar when you can - your buyers should always get what they pay for. anything less is just unacceptable..... Good Luck!!
