It is with great pleasure that we will be paying a higher fee for USPS
postal service effective 1/27/21. With the outstanding service the USPS
has been providing to us it is well deserved. SARCASM!

and of course the higher eBay fees on the now higher total transaction. 🙂

USPS provided good service until someone appointed Postmaster DeJoy who then unilaterally made certain decisions that were based upon politics. Hopefully he will be removed in the near future. But the damage has been done and it may take a few years, and additional funds, to repair that damage.

@m60driver Banning overtime was not a political decision. Sadly, some work forces, in more than one industry, know how to milk their system to FORCE overtime thus driving costs up. Consistent late deliveries didn't really start until the beginning of November. Prior to that deliveries were just fine without Postal Workers getting paid overtime. Through this month, January, we will begin to see deliveries moderate back to normal again without overtime.
Recently, when a bulk center reported that their work force was DOWN to 30% (and several in our area reported similar numbers) it wasn't because of any decision made by the Postmaster General, it has been blamed on Covid-19, quarantines and isolation protocols ...
Postal rates have been raised EVERY YEAR for as long as I can remember ...

If you have been alive for a while you might remember when mailing a letter with a stamp cost a nickel. Not too long ago the cost of a stamp was 13 cents. Big deal. It is a game called inflation. The key to life is to drink wine and stop whining. Get an education that makes your skill set outpace the rate of inflation. It's that simple.
When you update your budget for your ebay life it would be wise to expect to increase the budget for shipping costs annually. Postage is just the cost of doing business, nothing more, nothing less.

Good post and I would add this ... when I first started Shipping packages on eBay I noticed a bigger difference between USPS rates compared to UPS & Fedex ... on one of the Postal rate increases their rates seemed to jump up to just under UPS's rates (for packages). It was a smart business move on their part recognizing that there was "room" under their competitor's rates to increase their own and not lose market share. I recognized it when it happened because I had seen the same thing in numerous other industries.

We're paying for their mistakes and "ventures". I made all my listings calculated shipping because shipping has been so expensive depending upon where the item was going. It used to be weight was the only real factor but distance makes some things like 1st Class look more like Priority did a short time ago and there isn't a cheaper alternative. Why do they even have parcel post/select? It's more expensive. I can't wait for the preview(if there is one). Let me guess a 1st class parcel can now cost $6 or $7? Then you get a sub(mostly quota types) and he refuses to pick up your packages saying it's not his job giving you a nice late delivery.

Maybe start your own shipping company.
Be your own boss, do it right and show them how it's done.

eBay has not raised its fees. Since the fees are based on item price plus shipping plus state tax if applicable, it only makes sense that fees would be higher.

1st class parcels (commercial, zone 😎 will be $3.49 - $5.98 on Jan 27th. Closer zone rates are (about) comparably raised.
In other words, it went up for the holidays, back down to 2000 rates, but is raising even higher pretty soon. And I'm guessing that Holiday Rates will be a regular thing now since they've done it before.
Cost of business.

As long as I can get something cheaper from China than I can from NJ (I'm in NYC) it's all good (sarcasm)...

No reason to guess.
The new rates were approved months ago, and are available online for anyone to see.

Not only were the rates approved months ago, but also announced months ago--on or about October 9, 2020--three months ago.
Why are people whose business involves shipping just now learning about these rate hikes? There are rate hikes virtually every year--I would think it would behoove sellers who ship packages to keep up on the rate changes.

Cost of competing with amazon? They'll probably be buying the post office pretty soon. I don't sell much so I no longer have a good feel for shipping and did not know anything about holiday rates because my holiday was pretty much canceled in many areas around the country and world. It's a big country and the cost is what it is I guess but I'm sure many would agree the company is poorly run. I just wish ebay would stop penalizing sellers for calculated shipping. My cost of doing business is to direct all of the shipping cost on the buyer where it belongs. I'm not shipping a feather and saying it weighs 75 lbs. I try to find shipping solutions(flat rate/regional rate) for buyers but I can't simply sell the same item twice and get wildly different "profit" margins while I'm liquidating.
