Import charges

Hello,

    Could I please get some guidance with shipping international? I have been selling since 2013, but have done limited international shipping. I have a potential sale (shoes, in a USPS shoebox)  heading to the UK and my customer is inquiring about import charges and I have no clue where to look.  I went to USPS got some basic shipping info but have been unable to locate the needed information. is there somewhere I can look up charges  or calculate charges?  Thank you for any information, it is much appreciated! 🙂

Import charges

@kayhaas75,

Your buyer can find out for themselves. All they have to do is put the item into the shopping cart (not Buy It Now) (they may need to be on www.ebay.com to do this) and then go to the checkout page.

Their default shipping address should be shown, they can change it there if they want to. The shipping charges and import charges will be shown. Like this (from one of your listings, for a made up foreign address):

You can do the same thing, if you use a different eBay ID to view your listing. You can't purchase one of your own items, or put it into the shopping cart.

If they want to know about an auction-format listing, the shipping and import charges (to the buyer's current or default shipping location; in this case, the same as the previous example) are shown on the popup screen when they place a bid:

Import charges

Less than 39  their currency is no customs duty but they will have to pay 20% VAT.

FYI  you do not calculate, collect or remit. It's the buyer's responsibility to find out what they pay.

 If you want to be helpful send them this  www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty

@fab_finds4u, OP uses the GSP for international shipping, so the import charges are calculated by eBay/GSP. They are shown on the listing.

Also, as of Jan 1, 2021, I believe the UK no longer has an exemption from VAT for lower priced items. For the EU, there is no more exemption as of July 1, 2021.

I didn't know the OP used GSP. With GSP doing the shipping there's no need to ask the seller what those charges might be  since the Import Fee should be in the listing.  That's why I didn't look.

But thanks for that info.

I hate to sound so defensive but I'm aware there's no exemption for VAT.  That's why I said they still have to pay 20% VAT.  😺

Import charges

@fab_finds4u,

Many buyers don't know how to find the Import charges on a listing. For auctions, it's on the bid screen, but for fixed price, it says "see checkout". Many buyers (and sellers) don't  realize they can go to the checkout to see, without committing to buy the item. So I explained how to do that. It's always best to look, so you don't give the wrong advice.
