Lately, I have had some buyers trying to complain about the pettiest things you can imagine and I suspect that they are doing this on purpose to get their money back or some money off. I notice that some buyers start with the same pattern; they try to offer you less and less, then if you don't agree, they purchase whatever they want but when they get it, they damage the item on purpose or try to complain about something that wasn't the seller's fault so they can be reimbursed. eBay has shown support to the sellers but yet, this matter is causing a lot of annoyance because you need to justify yourself all the time because the used and old book that they purchase came with a small scratch that you get to see under a microscope, etc.
For example, just now my partner is dealing with this guy that only wanted to pay half of the 2.66 dollars for the shipping for an old songbook that at the store costs like 15 bucks and we were selling it for only 3 bucks. Now, this guy got it, I suspect he made copies of all the book and damaged that binding and now he is complaining about the binding, claiming that is in awful condition, which it was not, and he is demanding money back. He is so obvious, but I wonder why do we have to deal with this kind of people? How do we get rid of them? How do we improve the community to avoid this kind of behavior that only causes discouragement to the point that you do not feel like selling on this website anymore?

i would think if any buyer offers you less and less, block them, because they sound like trouble. The same if a potential buyer offers half of the shipping fee, block them. some annoying customers are part of doing business on the internet though. Theres no magic way of getting rid of these types of buyers with 300 million members on Ebay.

I've been very fortunate to not have a whole lot of negative experiences as a seller. Sorry this has happened to you recently.
Ocassionally, every seller has had to deal with problem buyers. You can't avoid them, unfortunately.
It is part of online retail, not every single buyer is a model citizen. If a buyer gives you grief, place them
on your BBL.

I would love that eBay has a way to show what kind of behavior the user has before deciding to make a transaction with that person so that you can save a lot of headaches.

That will never happen, Ebay would never advertise bad behavior on the part of buyers.

What changes should ebay undertake to help get rid
of some of the undesirables ?

Buyer shouldn't be demanding anything. You can report him for asking for something not in the listing.
You can tell him, return for refund.
And BBL.

The 1st thing you could do is take the "or offer" off your listings. When you state you take offers it is a magnet to low ball offers.
I don't take offers on any of my listings. If someone sends me a message making an offer I just ignore it. I didn't ask for their offer~~I don't owe them a response.
To avoid these people who buy after making a low ball offer, add them to your list if you don't like their offer and they can't retalliate against you.

Not that I am disagreeing with you, I think that it should happen.

Maybe ebay should test anyone who wants to become a member. The test should contain hard questions that a person would have to read ebay policies to be able to answer. It shouldn't contain multiple choices~~the person would have to enter their answer. You couldn't become a member until you answered all the questions correctly. At least then buyers and/or sellers would have a clue instead of being clueless.

I sympathise.
I may not actually close my account (strongly debating this). Ive had enough of changes and complaints, returns to and from buyers and sellers
I am deaf and cant phone, I get upset. Ebay dont keep their chat line open as a general rule and the other day I got thru and was told i couldnt be helped because I had the same initial as someone else. Turned out it was my son...... he has whole name listed , different username , tel no and I hope address!!
Small individuals sellers seem to have gone , frightened by postage hike and returns no doubt. A lot of the small shops seem to be fraudsters or hidden Chinese sellers by the fearexpressed by one they maybe 'slaves'
Even the community is no longer easy to use and you get slightly rude replies. I tried to post my own post but cant do it (Yes Im signed in )
Im going to go back to Friday Ad.
A basket ful of pre luvd has gone to the charity shop........... shame as the money used for those sales went towards a hol for my gkids.
