How long is taking USPS to scan a package?

On June 10, I put 1st class package in the collection box.  June 14, I checked the tracking and it had not scanned.  Today, June 17, it showed transit.  (If you work for the post office) Why does it take so long for a package to be scanned to show the package is moving?  I thought that within 2 days of collection that the package would scan, but it's taking 7 days to scan.

There are any number of reasons why a specific package may not show an immediate scan:

If the bar code is across the box flap (in other words it is somewhat distorted) the scanner can not read it.

If your printer was low on ink resulting in a lack of contrast.

If the label was wrinkled or torn.

If another package was partially covering your package as it went down the conveyor belt.

If your post office is suffering a labor shortage.

OK - In my own case I never drop them in a blue box. I always place them on an empty clerk station. I have watched my own post office when I drop off packages and they are always scanned as they are removed from the counter.

Way way back I felt guilty bringing a couple of hundred packages on which they made no money selling postage. I was assured that the post office did get an "activity credit" (for lack of a better term) as the original scanner. In other words there is a definite advantage to them to scan it, and a loss to them if they fail to scan it.

Is this an isolated case or does it happen constantly? If constantly then a conversation with your post master might be in order (Not a clerk - the post master)

As long as packages end up showing a scan at some point, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Prior to this Corona era I have had packages not scanned until they were delivered - no many times but more than 2.  Since that time I have the desk clerk scan the packages in at our PO while I waited in line  or my carrier  picks them up and scans them as picked up.  Haven't had an issue since then.

Dropping  packages off on the PO counter won't  necessary assure the package will get an acceptance scan.  our PO places the dropped of  packages on a cart and then they are "supposed" to be scanned in but people do make mistakes.

I drop my packages in the big bluebox and they always get acceptance scan by end of the day and sometimes another scan in another location a couple hours away.
